there are services where you put a tracking device on your car, and if it moves without authorization (i dunno how they authorize, i forget) you're notified via cell, pager, email, or whatever.

In some cases you can't help it. A lot of thieves are starting to use tow trucks as method of stealing cars. Nothing will stop a tow truck from taking your vehicle.

The old car is a 1995 Acura with 190,000 miles. I am leaning towards getting another Acura. Acuras are very reliable cars and hold their value well.

They also get stolen a lot.
Maybe you should get a Geo Metro.

Honda's come with immobolizer's standard now. They can still steal your car with a tow truck but that takes a little more effort than hot wiring a car.

Trust me, determined thiefs will steal your car no matter what type of security device you have. I'd suggest buying a lower end model car. Don't buy a model that has an engine that is well saught-after by import enthusiests. People are after any Acura Integra for the engine and also a lot of the interior and exterior can be re-sold. If you are really really worried about theft I'd suggest looking into a Ford or a Hyundai or something. Something that isn't in the top ten list of being stolen everyday.

Dude, the only thing you can do is look at one of those "top ten" most stolen cars list, and not get ANY of those. Maybe even top 25. Otherwise your car is worth something to somebody, even just random parts off of it. It sucks but there's nothing else you can really do...

You realize that the "top 10 stolen car list" corresponds almost exactly to the "top 10 selling cars" list? :Q

Another really great thing to invest in for car protection would be a pitt bull. Only if your car is near somewhere you could keep a dog though.

big old car alarm

if you place a 120db siren in a location the theif will HAVE to be to hotwire/drive your car he prolly wont take it.
also have a small back-up battery for it just in case he cuts the original battery to it.

alarms do work.

get the sterring wheel locking thing AND the brake pedal lock (theifs can rip the steering wheel off and drive with screwdrivers if they are talented) but the brake is pretty essential.

I guess you never read my post. I have friends who have nice cars... they have every single device imaginable to try and stop a thief. Their cars were all stolen via a tow truck.
