I'm taking some friends hiking in mid August and I can't decide where to take them. The plan is to hike in the first day to a base camp site and then spend the next few days doing day hikes. The last day we would follow the same route back to our cars. Most of the people going are new to this, so I need a place that is somewhat remote but not overly difficult to hike in to. In other words, nothing technical involved.

I personally want to go to an area I haven't been to. Places I've hiked in that area: Wind River Range, Tetons, Beartooths, Bighorns. I thought about going to Glacier, but we are diving from Illinois in a day and that is kind of far. Plus the nights get cold up there that time of year. I'm leaning towards some place in the Absaroka wilderness area. Anyone know of some trails that would work for this trip? Non horse trails are preferred. ;)

Edit: spelling

Badlands in South Dakota are cool but not sure if there's more than a day's worth to see. Glacier is definitely worth the trip, though.

I would still recommend Glacier park. There are a lot of hikes to chose from, and I personally prefer the Rockies to the badlands.

Actually, I've already been all over the Badlands and Black Hills. I grew up in the area. I'm looking for something more in the way of mountains.

Glacier would be a 24 hour drive straight through. We're trying to get there in one day so that's not going to work very well. Even if we leave after work one day and drive to Wall, SD (free lodging at my grandma's place) we wouldn't get there until late the next day.

Any other suffestions? I'd be open to an out of the way place in the Bighorns too, just not cloud peak. That's definitely closer than Glacier!

Ok, one last bump for suggestions now that people are back from the long weekend.
