I need around 5000 lumens of colimated (sp?) light with a long life

edit: the light needs to be white
edit: considering metal hallide, any suggestions/warnings/advice/etc for me?
 
What about metal halide? A 100 W MH lamp should hit the spot nicely (sorry, bad unintentional pun).
 
i've been considering metal hallide, but have a few questions about it (too lazy to google and swim through the sites selling crap). do MH bulbs put out a lot of heat, like incandescents? how 'white' are they (color temp) on average? how's bulb life? and yes, that's a bad pun, but i laughed hehehe
edit: how much will a good 100w bulb run me?
 
btw, leds are not really an option, they dont put out nearly enough light unless you use those expensive as hell 5w lexicon stars, and i'd still need a lot of those. the problem with multiple light sources is that it's really hard to make it all collimated (you need a huge reflector) and is just overall not a practical solution
 
sodium lamp is too low of a color temperature, but i didnt specify that. i'll go edit my op to clarify. sorry bout that
 
I?d check out a new or used 35mm slide projector. I?m not into photography, but I would bet the lamps are available in a range of temperatures. Or Google for photography studio lamps, stage lighting?

I'm sure you'll need to get an incandescent lamp, as other types usually have high emmission at specific wavelengths.
 
Just to let you know you can't just buy a lamp you need a ballast with it. and MH's do put off a fair ammount of heat. Go to any big store like cotco or home Depot or look at gas station lights those are metal halides

Metal Halide are the really white, almost blue street lights. They put out a bit of heat, especially the 450W variety. I am not sure if you can even get one at 100W.
HPS - High Pressure Sodium are the orangish street lights you see. They put out a little less heat and use a little bit less power, but aren't as bright per watt as a MH.
Flourescent would be the lowest power/low temp light I can think of atm.
 
You may want to try using many compact flourescent lamps. A 18 watt CFL gives out approximately 860 lumens. So if you had 6 CFLs, they would do the job nicely.
Colour temp is 6500K, low heat emission, They ideally last for 10,000 hours. If you want them to last longer, you can make yourself a custom electric ballast which works at slightly higher frequencies.
 
Use a carbon stick. They burn out relatively quickly, but are not expensive. They can go up to 3500 degrees which is brighter than most other types of materials can go. You can even use the graphite from normal pencils to test with.

If you want to use LEDs and want to be able to control the colour temperature then you should look at LumiLEDs. They are very efficient and powerful compared to most normal LEDs. http://www.lumileds.com/ Powerful enough to replace normal light sources in most cases.
