I'm thinking about getting a photo printer for the home... But have only just begun to do research on them. It's not for anything other than printing trip photos and other misc. junk. And all pics will be coming from a Canon s230.

Here are a few early candidates:

Canon i850
Canon s900 (outdated model?)
HP Photosmart 7350

I bascally stumbled upon these models from reading a review, then checking out links within the review, and so on. I assume these printers are also ballpark in terms of pricing too. All i need is something that'll do great/excellent 4x6's and hold it's own in black and normal colored images. Budget: < $500

Please, lend a hand to a noob. ;)

I read somewhere that the cycle for printers is from September to August. This years new round of printers are starting to come out so I would wait a month or so before making a decision. Unless you want a really good deal, because last years models have already dropped a ton in price. The HP 5550, which I consider a pretty decent printer from experience, started out at over $150 and is now down to $99. It seems that the 4800x1200 resolution was the top dog in all of last years printers, but I can't wait to see what print capabilities come from this years inkjets. I think we will also see an increase in memory card slots, speeds, and a decrease in size. HP has already started to roll their new line out. The 5650 looks pretty cool, but I haven't seen a review on it yet.

Just my 2 cents,

Don't forget to get the price of ink cartridge replacements before you buy the printer. Also some printers get more prints out of a cartridge than others. I learned my lesson time before last. I baught a cheap printer (Lexmark) and went through cartridges like crazy. Last time I baught a HP and am still on the original cartridge and it has been a couple years since I got the printer. I will have to replace the cartridges soon though.

Hmm, interesting. I'm not in an incredible rush to get one. If there's new and improved technology just on the horizon then i might just wait and see what comes out in the next few weeks.

noc: the Canon s9000 did look like a nice printer, and i was considering it but i dont really see myself doing any wide prints. The cheaper non-wide s900 seems more suited for my needs.

Strange coincidence, but my printer is dead, and I have been doing some research. Was a toss up between a Canon i950, a HP 7350, and a HP 7550.

The 7350 was the lowest price one, but you need to swap the color cartridge out for B&W. A real pain for me.

The 7550 has a little lcd screen to preview the pics, but I could hardly care about that. It does have an extra spot for the B&W cartridge, but it costs twice as much

The Canon gives the best photo performance, but the text quality is supposedly decent, but not fantastic, like the HP's. It does have several different color cartridges though, which means you only have to change the ones you are running low on. Price is midway between the two HP's, about $250

Gonna go with the Canon myself.

no.

Anyway, I have the i850 and i have been extremely pleased with it. I sell the HP 7000 series photo printers at work, and I know they dont stack up in comparison to the canon.

BTW if anyone is looking for a 7350, staples has refurbs for $99 this week (instantly, no rebates). You could use a $20 of $100 coupon to make the deal even sweeter.
