Anyone know what the best chip to overclock is?

What chip is having the best success rate?
Best value?
Best compatability for the future? (ie: Slot 1 vs FC-PGA)

I was thinking about the P3-700, but am open to any and all advice/suggestions.

I am currently running on an Asus P3V4X and would hopefully like to keep using this platform (non-athlon), just because I don't want to have to buy a new mobo. But my next comp, who knows. If athlon is the way to go, plz post =).

I have 128 megs of 133 mushkin infineon.

For the record, I have a celeron 300A @ 450 (not completely stable, starting to burn out) and a p3-600 cumine running at 756 (i got a crappy chip) I hope to have better luck in the future

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PIII 700 is quite good. over half seem to make it to 133/933
mine however quits at 120 FSB
oh well fast enough for me!

The 700 is fine, but walk on the wild side, get crazy and go for the P3 750 or maybe even the 800/100 if the price suits your budget. That way you'll have a better "floor" if your overclocking plans don't pan out. Remember, YMMV.

IMO, the Athlon is a great chip but I wouldn't switch at this point. Wait until the new P4/Willamette and DDR Athlon systems come out to make any really majar platform changes. Then again, variety is the spice of life, the budget or the li'l' woman permitting.

Make sure it's a 700E and is part of the best batch.

Slot 1 and FCPGA o/c the same to me, but the cooling is different.

700E is great.. a lot of them can break the 1ghz barrier.
my personal preference is the Celleron II.. 533A or 566, they're cheap and really easy to overclock.. most of them go over 800 easy because of their 66fsb bus... those chip are askin to be overclocked!

as for the AMD side.. go w/ a Tbird 800, make sure the bridge is opened though, I've heard some good stories of Tbird oc, but Duron seems to be not as well when compare w/ the Tbird.. but over all performance in class it'll beat the Cellmine hands down.

p3-700. mine does 966 with 1.65v (default) and 1050 with air cooling (alpha+fan).

I thought I read something somewhere that since Intel's announcement of the 1.13, that it was much harder to get chips to go since they were trying to squeeze out their yields.

Anyone know if this is true?

I don't think that is the case. The 1.133 GHz P3 (which has been "recalled") is from a different stepping, the cC0, from the earlier chips and so shouldn't affect their yields. If you're going to get a P3 for overclocking, just be sure you get a cB0. See this.

All I have noticed in the forums are reports that (1) the Celeron II's are not as good as in the past at overclocking, and (2) the Durons and Tbirds may have their multipliers more permanently locked by AMD by their removing certain pins from the chip.
