I need a web host

Can any one recommend a web host? I already have a web host, but I might need a second. My current host has raised the price of their service to $8 a month, which I think is a little bit high for the type of service I want. Do you think $5 per month is the right price?

My friend wants to starts a website for a niche audience. I'm not sure if he going to get any visitors, but on the other hand, they do have a website for just about everything.

Is that $48 a year really going to break your bank to the point where you want to hassle with switching hosts?

there's free webhosting from some AT members here. might be a cheap/risk free way to start it up and see if it's worth it.

Either way I think I need a second account. If I don't get a second account I'd probably have to give administrator privileges to a second person. I guess it's not totally out of the question, but I am hesitant to do it.

So what's wrong with a free account?

I'm worried about what I will get with a free account. There is no guarantee of service.

Fair enough, I'd give it a try. They're treated the same way as paid accounts, and no support staff can tell the different between a paid or free account. It doesn't hurt to try it.

I'm currently hosting with DreamHost and have been fairly happy with them. They have great deals...It's still about $8/mo, but I've tried many other hosts. You get what you pay for, from what I've seen. You basically get unlimited domains, so one $8 fee per month will allow you to host a ton of sites, and I think you can even provide multiple FTP accounts, so another person could upload to your directory, if that's what you're looking for.

Why would they give out free accounts?

Because I can?

Better yet, see my answers in this thread.

yup. halfpower, if you're friend is so interested in starting a site, free is great way to test the waters. if it completely flops, then no money wasted. i've used dartworth's free account offer with no problems at all.

if it's a static site or some forums, then i'd just sign up with DeviousTrap or dartworth. IF the site becomes popular, then your buddy can justify spending some cash on a regular host.
