I need a video card for under $150

Right now I have an nvidia 5200 something or other, and with Direct X 9 with CS:S and DoD:S I average about 10 fps. That's with all the lowest settings. With DX8.1 and medium-low settings, I get about 20-40 fps.

Sooo... I just made some money selling stuff on eBay, and I could use a new card. But it has to be AGP because I am not buying a new mobo. I would like to get 30 fps with medium settings with Direct X 9 in CS:S and DoD:S. So I would like to spend $100, but up to $150 is ok. Are there any cards that can do this? Maybe someone is selling a used one?

A used 9800 pro or 6600GT would suit you fine it sounds (and for CS:S/hl2 purposes there's very little between them IIRC).

Look in the FS/T forum on AT :)

6600GT if you don't plan to do any overclocking. 6800le or 6800 'vanilla' if you want to try unlocking pipes and overclocking it.

You could also wait to see how the X1300 benches, as it's rumored to be available in AGP form. It'll probably be slightly slower than a 9800 or 6600, but may draw less power when idle because of newer tech. I'd wait a week, if you can.

So which is better? The ATi has 256 bit memory interface while the nvidia has 128. But the nvidia runs at 500/1000MHz while the ATi runs at 380/680. Also the OpenGL for ATi is 1.4 and for nvidia 1.5.

i would take a 6600gt for pci express

i would go with a 6800 NU "vanilla" for AGP.

i would not go used either. spend 10-15 bucks for something new from newegg.

Come on, someone answer before I go buy one and find out I should have gotten the other.

Get the 6600gt if you need to make your mind now. The 9800pro is slower. Maybe the 6800 has rebates to push the price under $150.

Actually I think I am going to get a 9800 for $85 from someone here on the forums. Nobody is selling their 6600s for that cheap.

Rather than start a new thread I think i'll just jump in here if the OP doesn't mind a slight but not complete hijack. :)

I'm running a 9500 Pro and just upped my system ram from 512 -> 1.5gb. The ram increase was immediately realized when hopping into Orgrimmar in World of Warcraft but one thing I'm considering is doing one more upgrade to this PC before I build a brand new one.

Do you guys think the jump from a 9500 Pro to a 6600GT for around $150 is worth it if I'll use it for around a year? I guess it will net out at less than that since I will end up selling the 9500 Pro for $50-$75. Will I notice a massive improvement? BTW, are there any particular 6600 manufacturers that you would suggest to definately avoid?

Thanks!

The 6600gt is usually a bit faster in most games, so for the same price I'd get a 6600gt.
