I need a tiny laptop like the HP Omnibook 500. Any alternatives?

I work at a PC shop and some guy brought in this tiny laptop. The HP omni book 500. I love it because it is really small. Being a college student I hate lugging around my behemoth of a laptop that I have now.

I don't need much of a system but I require a few things.

Small. Lightweight. Screen size doesnt matter as long as it can do at least 1024x768. At least 256mb of ram, 512mb really prefeared. I would really really like internal wireless like the omnibook 500 has (802.11b). But 802.11g would be better of course. As far as proccessor goes - faster the better but I dont need much because all im doing with it is word and the web. Battery life needs to be at least 1.5 hours (on a new battery). Needs 10/100 lan. HD size doesnt matter.

Is there any alternatives to this?

Half a dozen different ones, but I can't tell you about them until I get mine. 😉

Omnibook 500 and 510, Fujitsu lifebooks, IBM several, Dell C and D 400, Averatec 3150, more.

Catch is two fold, people REALLY like these little 12" screen notebooks, and there are a bunch of ways costs can add up to make them usefull. I was hooked on getting a C400, buy as I look over decent priced units I kept learning why they were cheaper, key parts missing. C400 for example doesn't have an internal floppy or optical drive, and won't boot from a USB drive so you have to chase down the dell only media cable and drive enclosure if you ever want to reload the OS etc. Good batteries are $60, and then you learn about the performance differences between the old pentium cpus and newer centrino etc.

Short answer is that base used 12" models start about $250 and have a LOT of weakpoints and can easily need another $100 for battery and wifi.

$400 can get you brand new decent laptop.

Sony makes a 10.4" Vaio, but it is/was over $2K.

It meets all your specs.

Just search for ultracompacts, lots of talk going on about them, and around $1k there are nice new options, $2k for fancy new gaming versions, and $500 for pretty good used, with buy carefully or get burned $250 two generations older systems that still may be ok. Like any computer purchase you need ot pay attention to it being able to do what you need.

I mentioned the HP NC4000 series to mike when he was looking for one. Most of them still have warranty remaining as they came with a 3yr one standard. Specs are roughly 1.5 ghz p-m, 512 mb ram, and 40gig hd and usually have an advanced docking station with drives included. They can be found for around $425 shipped on ebay depending on the specs.
