This is for recording.

What manufacturers are there? How would it differ from a stage mic?
When would I need a shock absorber?

What about the SM57?

For a quality mike to record vocals, expect to pay about or over $1,000. A mike under $50 is just like recording into a cellphone. The quality will suck.
This is the main vocals mike they use in the studio I hang out in. It costs about $1,200 give or take.

SHURE makes a lot of good, affordable mics. You probably won't find anyhting decent under $50, but under $100 you may have some luck.

What kind of recordings do you plan on making?

If you are looking for one of the nice recording-studio mics, suspended with the filter and all, don't even think about getting something for under $50. Most decent microphones (of any type) will run you at LEAST a couple hundred, with many getting into the thousands.

A good general purpose mic would be a cardiod.. pretty standard, and Shure has a couple that I've seen for under $100. That would be your best bet.
