I need a sound card that works

Hiya,

I have been having sound card problems.
It started with my Sound Blaster Live. GTA San Andreas did not like
the card and sound was terrible. I spoke with Rockstar support who told me
the sound card is at fault.

I picked up a Best Buy cheapie card.. I dont remember the brand name but its
exclusive to Best Buy. I dont remember the exact problems I had with this card,
but it didnt work right... so..

I replaced it with a Comp USA store brand card. With this card the sound
on my games is fine... but MP3's are choppy.

I am not into surround sound at all. Only 2 speakers will ever be attached to
the computer, so I dont need a card with a lot of bells and whistles.. just
one that works. I am hoping to get by with a cheap card because of this fact.

Any suggestions?

Peace
Rich

Okay.. so now I am really frustrated.
I went to Best Buy to pick up a monitor and decided to buy all the odds and ends
I needed to finish my computer.

My sound card selection was limited to say the least.. so I ended up getting
a Sound Blaster Audigy 4, the latest in mid quality sound cards.

Now all my applications have a loud popping sound for about a minute
when starting up. Also if I visit a website with audio I also get the popping sound.
After I play my games for about a minute the sound goes away.
The Windows wav sounds on start up and shut down pop like crazy as well.

I am going nuts here as this is my fourth sound card in the last couple of months.
All I want is decent mid grade sound.

I am beginning to think that the culprit could be my motherboard chipset??
I have an MSI mobo with an ATI chipset. I did remember to disable the onboard
sound in the BIOS. The onboard sound works perfect but I want a real sound card
to save important CPU cycles for gaming.

As suggested above I have tried reducing hardware acceleration in steps all the
way to zero. I have tried updated drivers for all the cards.
The new card only has the original drivers available.. with the exeption of some beta
drivers that I have downloaded but not yet installed.

WTF!? This is only a sound card and its getting more complicated than choosing
a good video card. In the old days I would just throw any cheap sound card
I had laying around in my system and it would just plain work.

What must I do to get decent mid quality sound from my system??

My system is not the very best, but it is no slouch.
AMD 3400+ with a gig of RAM and ATI x800xl video.
It should be able to handle any sound card I throw at it?

I am at my wits end.. any help/advice/suggestion would be appreciated.

On a side note I picked up a pair of cheap speakers. Altec Lansing VS2220 2 speaker
system for about $30 and they sound great when the sound card is not busy
popping.

Yes.. but doesnt your sound eat up about 10% of your CPU cycles?
I dont remember what sound is on my motherbord.. or even the model
of the motherboard off hand.. but I can look that information up if its needed
to help fix my problem.

Okay people...

Last night I spent a couple of hours reading threads in the motherboard forum.
I ran across a thread where somebody who was a hardware service tech
said that cheap power supplies are a common problem for sound problems.
So today I went out and bought a 500 watt Dynex power supply and now my problem is solved. Please dont make fun of my Dynex products as I get a deep discount on these.
This PS retails for $104 and I got it for $30, as my daughter is a Best Buy
employee.

I searched for the thread that I got this info from so I could give proper thanks.. but I couldnt find the thread so I wanted to at least reply to this
thread in hopes that someone else may benifit from this information.
I have spent countless hours on this problem and it was the first time
I heard somebody relate it to the power supply.

Peace
Rich
