I need a SCSI lesson

I have built lots of computers, but never used SCSI for anything, so I know nothing about it. I just bought a new G4 MAC and it has a SCSI card in it. It is a ATTO Technology Inc. card, LVD/SE, Ultra 3 SCSI. It is running a Quantum hard drive, and the cable connecting it has two more connectors on it, not going to anything. I want to add a SCSI -- CD/RW but don't know anything about it. Now the questions:

1. --What do I need to know to add a CD/RW drive???

2. --Are there precautions I need to take (other than normal)???

3. --Are there special settings that need to be made???

4. --I have heard of terminations that SCSI uses. There is a small device stuck to the top of the hard drive and it has the last connector on the SCSI cable going to it, I assume this is a termination??? What do I need to know about this???

5. --Like I said, the cable going from the SCSI card to the hard drive has two extra connectors on it ---- but if I mount the CD/RW in the only available slot, the cable would not reach. What do I need to do to make this work????

If the answer to my questions would require more than you can reply to here, maybe you can give a link to a site that would answer my questions??? Any other info you can give me would be much appreciated. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

See if there are any other SCSI connectors on the SCSI card. If you put it on the same channel as the hard drive it will slow the hard drive down.

sharkeeper -- thanks for the link, I will check it out.

n0cmonkey -- The only other connector on the card is to the outside of the case. There is only one available to the inside. How much will it slow the hard drive down???

I would stay away from SCSI CDRW because of the price. These days the same performance can be had from IDE for 1/3 of the money.

The SCSI FAQ id what you need, and the first lesson is that the card is automatically assigned ID 7.

Best of luck! Enjoy!

Dont have exact information with me (just bought some SCSI stuff and read some of the manual ;)), but it something like from Ultra 3 (160MB/s potential) to Ultra SCSI or something which is either 40 or 80MB/s.

Thanks for all the replies. The SCSI/FAQ link you gave me, has LOTS of information!!! I should be able to find my answers there. Sounds like I might want to go with a IDE CD/RW if it cuts the hard drive speed that much!! THANKS EVERYONE!! :D
