I need a root canal

When I was a kid, my parents didn't use the 'pea' sized amount of tooth paste, they let me go to town on the toothpase. As a result, I aparently swallowed too much and my teeth are harder than diamond. Or so I thought. My dentist said I would never get a cavity for as long as I was alive, and probably not for a while after I was dead. Well, that was about 20 years ago.

about 2 weeks ago, I started getting a mild pain in one tooth when I breathed cold air. Everything looked fine if you looked at it, so I figured it was just one of those things that goes away. Well, it stuck around for a week, so I set up a dental appointment. First in about 10 years.

The dentist said my teeth had zero plaque, and my gums were all healthy, but I had 3 cavities. And one of them was so deep that I need a root canal. The cavity is also just above the gum line, so it may not be possible to put a cap on it (it may be yanked then)

If I had gone to the dentist sometime in the past 10 years, it probably would have been caught as a cavity instead. But now I get to have a root canal. yay me! so go to the dentist. This checkup only cost me $30 it was way woth it if I would have done it once a year or every 2. But no, I was too stupid.

If I come in here posting about random crap on the 26th, it is because the N2O hasn't worn off yet. Just giving you a heads up :)

That sucks, I had one root canal in my life when I busted my mouth with my surfboard. Thank goodness for caps. The process sucked as I am sure you are finding out, percs were my friend during the ordeal.

I had a root canal done a couple of months ago.

All in all, it wasn't a bad procedure. But, I also seem to have a high pain tolerance when it comes to my teeth (I broke a tooth once and it didn't hurt at all.. unfortunately that tooth had to be removed). I was referred to a specialist for the root canal, which required two visits, each a week apart and each taking less than an hour and the only time I felt pain was for a few seconds when he put the needle into the root (it hurt like a motherf***er).

A few weeks later I went to my dentist to get the crown molded and a temporary crown put in. Then two weeks after that I got the permanent crown put in. Actually just had a check-up yesterday and all of my other teeth are doing fine.

I didn't get any N2O though.. just the medicine/novocaine injected into my teeth/gums.

So long as there is no abscess, the lidocaine should make it so you don't feel anything.

thats cool! because i have to get one this coming saturday... not looking forward to that. I have a total of 3 cavities that the dentist needs to work on, one of them will most likely require a root canal. should have brush and floss everyday.

LMAO! Why would you not go to the dentist in the past 20 years??? Even if your teeth are healthy, it would still be good to have a check up every now and then.

Too much fluoride leads to fluorosis, and while it hardens your enamel it also can make it brittle. Too much of a good thing is not always a good thing. They've made kid's toothpaste taste so good that kids eat it and therefore we are seeing more and more fluorosis.

You might need a post or pins put in your tooth after the root canal to help anchor the gold or porcelain crown, but unless the tooth is totally full of decay or breaks off, you should still be able to have it crowned.

I've had a couple of them, they're really not bad compared to the pain you feel before getting treatment.

Given enough lidocaine the surgery will be just a bit uncomfortable as the dentist swishes the pipe cleaners around in your tooth.

Afterwards, I didn't need anything stronger than a regular dose of ibuprofen.

I scale and plane my own teeth. I havent been to a dentist in over ten years. My aunt is a dental tech and taught me how to proffesionally clean my own teeth. Dentist are the biggest ripoffs. She even says that and its her profession.

Cost me $30 for a checkup and full xray set. for $30, I would rather someone do it who does it 10 times a day than do it myself.

Well, you must have great dental insurance. I dont. A routine check up and cleaning would cost me a coupla hundred at least.

I was under the impression that the pH of the fluid in an abscess partially neutralizes the lidocaine, making the anesthesia ineffective. You probably know better that I do, however.

Would I rather go in for a teeth cleaning or a root canal? Honestly, I'd go for teeth cleaning, but it's a closer tossup than you might think.
