My nephew's 19" KDS CRT bailed a few months ago. He's been using a 17" cheapie.
His father gave him a used 19" KDS which is literally fading fast. To see if he would like an LCD I hooked up a 19" Samsung but he hates it. He wants a 19 or 20" CRT.
When I mentioned Anandtech's high end NEC/Mitsubishi FP2141 SB-BK 22" for around $634 he frowned on the price.
So, any good recs?
I guess he's thinking of a monitor less than $500 if that is possible.

i picked this sucker out for a friend, i fell in love with it and wish i ordered one for myself, cheap and excellent specs.

I hope BB is having this on sale tomorrow. The price is right.

Well, I talked to my nephew and he likes the price and size of the 19" monitors. Here is a list so far I've compiled from NewEgg for 19" monitors:
NEC/Mitsubishi FE991SB-BK $246 + $25 shipping, 1280x1024@85Hz
Viewsonic G90FB $218 + $25, 1600x1200@77Hz
Viewsonic E90FB $210 + $25 1280x1024@80Hz
Viewsonic P95F+B $246 + $25 1600x1200@87Hz (of course its likely the highest he will game at is 1280x1024 and probably not even that but these are the lowest resolutions posted on Newegg's website that don't specifically post the 1280x1024 frequency rate).
I suspect that NEC has its fans as well as Viewsonic but NEC seems to carry more "cache" (please help me spell this word, sounds like cachay, with a long trailing "a"). Ok, NEC has a really good 'rep'. Damn public education.

If your nephew wants a great monitor cheap get one of these... I am!!

http://www.azatek.com/pricelist.asp?CID=58

Sony Trinitron FD Flat Display 1600x1200 85Hz .24mm Apperture Grille
$145.00

some other nice monitors on there.

KDS ARE JUNK!!! Last 5 computers my friend and I have built for other people he always had them get KDS, he even got a KDS. The KDS he has is A$$ the sides of the screen are so blurry and it just looks terrible.

My IBM P72 17" is the best monitor I have ever used. Only thing wrong with it is at one point or another I did something to damage the protective coating. I have been thinking of stripping it all the way off (trying to) but it only is visible if there is sunlight on it

Y

well for graphics work the are, they are the most accurate monitors in terms of color that ive ever seen, peopel that do lots of graphics work know about them
they are lesser known because they are almost impossoable to find in a store, my photoschool has 2 comp labs fullof them, you will see them on macs alot nd this being a PC forum it does not supprose me that not many know of them

laCie has been making some of the best multiplatform pc/mac hardware for years

if you google for monitor review lacie you will get a bunch of scattered pages, some are of the older electronblue 2, but they still give it 5/5

the NEC is 95% as good as the lacie in the 22in DPT and like 300$ less, however someone here recently got the 22in for 650$

You've got the nec/mitsubishi monitor choice wrong. There is a best choice. The best 19" and 21" crt monitors on the market have been determined by many a review. Just look at anandtech's ultimate gaming rig monitor. The very best 19" or 21" is from nec/mitsubish but not the 991... the dp930sb for 19" is the best 19" crt on the market today and the dp2070sb is the best 21" crt on the market. Unfortunately it seems they are phasing out the 930sb, and going with the 991 which is inferior but certainly cheaper to produce. Newegg no longer lists the 930sb. Here is a list to the 21" on newegg:

http://www.newegg.com/app/View...=24-002-012&depa=0

And here is a link to another retailor that has the 930sb:

http://ncix.com/products/index...facture=NEC-MITSUBISHI

thats a canadian site, but I'm sure it is still available somewhere in the u.s.

Check any monitor review, really ask around in video. The 930sb is unparalleled. The best 19" crt you can buy, and arguably if you don't believe in lcd tech, the very best 19" gaming display available. :) Shameless plugging, I do have one of course. But it is the best. Try to find one in a local store and just check it out compared to anything else. Play with the superbright 1 and 2 as well. This monitor is beautiful,
