I love this Toshiba 2615dvd, but the noise is killing me. I don't think it's that loud compared to some laptops, but I leave it on all the time and it's starting to bother me, as quiet as it is.

Can you guys recommend an Ultra quiet laptop?

Must have

TFT Screen, 12" or better
DVD
500 mhz and up.

No K6-2's please. I need some battery life.

ALTERNATIVELY - how can I make this laptop quieter? Can I replace the fan with something better?

thanks,

rick

One of the biggest problems with laptops is heat dissipation. You don't have the luxury of drilling holes, adding fans, or pumping your AC into them. You're dealing with tightly packed components, & little to no room for air movement. I believe some manufacturers go so far as to use liquid to get the heat to the outer edges where it can be dissipated into the air.

What am I rambling about?

Don't modify your laptop. Bad idea.

You may be able to find one that's quieter, but it's a little hard to test without buying one. Unless laptops come with db ratings...

Thanks for the reply. I understand all the issues - I'm a computer engineer. I just want to take advantage of the experience of all the members out there.

I know that an ultra quiet laptop exists. But as you point out, vendors don't list db ratings.

About modifying the laptop - I was just thinking there might be a slightly more expensive aftermarket fan I could buy that would have the same cfm rating but be quieter.

AFAIK, most laptops turn their fans off if you are not using the CPU.

Try getting CPUcool or some other software utility so that it will shut the CPU off when not needed.
