I need a quiet but decent cpu fan for my XP

I just have a stock heatsink and fan on my xp1800 right now but the 36db is just a tad bit too high for me now when I leave my comp on to go to sleep. Iwas thinking about the vantec stealth or whatever but they seem to be more for case fans. In any case, I was wondering if people could give me suggestions on replacing the currect fan on my cpu with something quieter, hopefully without having to get a new heatsink as well. Or if its cheap enough maybe I will just get a new hsf, but depends on the price and quietness. any suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks.

Putting a lower flow fan on your HS will probably just increase your temperatures.

For a very cheap method, look here. It is the GC68 from SVC from only $4.99. It would be noticably quieter and provide adequate performance.

For an even quieter solution and a little more performance look into the Thermalright SK-7. It is about $20 without a fan. You could then add a Panaflo L1A and it would be a very quiet solution for about $26 total.

It may be possible to throw a Panaflo on the GC68. It would be cheap and quiet, but may not perform well enough. Has anyone here done it?

For the CPU, get a Vantec Aeroflow for your AMD. It spins at like 5k RPMs but it is one of the most quietest HSFs out there that I've seen without the speed control you see on the Volcano 9 and 11. As for case fans, Vantec stealth or Panaflow L1A fans are fine. I use Vantec Stealths, but dont have any Panaflow fans, but from what I've seen in the forums, everyone says they cool good and are quiet.

I have my Aeroflow hooked up to a rheobus. I usually run it at the lowest speed. It's all but silent and still cools my Palomino 2100+ fine.

Hk, I would have to second BG4533's recommendation of the GC68. For $5 it can't be beat and it'll do OK on the 1800+. Might be pushin it's capabilities but I don't think your processor will fry. Panaflo's are good, I like the SK-7 route. However, if you want something more exotic you could get the Zalman CNPS6000-Cu. It's a whole new heatsink that is flower shaped and has a 92mm fan @ 20dB. But, that could be a last resort hehe.

if it pushes the same amount of cfm shouldn't a new fan be ok?

iZero what kinda temps do you get?

what should I use to measure the temps on my cpu?

praetorian, do you mean exotic because of its design or price?

Motherboard Monitor 5 is good for watching temps.
The Zalman is shaped differently and sort of expensive for the performance it gives.

Are you asking about putting a new fan on the stock HS with the same CFM only quieter? Yes, it should provide similar temperatures.

im using a L1A with a GC68 on my 1700+ (Palomino) w/o any problems. If you guys are talking about a 1800+ (t-bred) it will probably be fine with a GC68/L1A.

its not tbred, i think palomino? akgka stepping. right now with my stock hsf fan, i'm getting temps around 50C. I might go the gc68 route b/c the fan does blow more air and is slightly quieter. what are some people's temps with the 1800?

If you need the quietest but best performance, I'd reccomend an SLK800 with a Panaflo L1A, that'd be super quiet but have great performance. BTW, 50C with a stock heatsink is decent, I usually get about 53C with my cooler master HSF.

I ordered this the other night when i seen this thread took them two days to get it to me, I love this thing it cools my 1.33 thunderbird great leaving temps at about 35 - 42C, I originally had a wbk 38 with one of those screaming delta fans on it, gota say this thing is quiet now all I need to do is get some quiet case fans.
