I need a PSU

Hello,

I have a PC I'm getting ready to sell. The PSU thats in it now is a cheapo 350W that came with the case.
The PC has been running pretty much constant for the past 2 years plus I use to smoke.
So I figure it would be a good idea to replace the PSU before I sell the PC.

I wish now that I would have got in on FAR Ultra V series 500W that has been in the hot deals forum.

Anyways I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good cheap PSU that has a reputation of being reliable. Doesn't need to be fancy, just cheap and reliable.

Specs of the PC: MSI K7N2G-ILSR socket A w/ on board video, sound, lan, etc., XP2100+(stock), 1GB HyperX PC2700, 80GB HD, DVDRW, floppy, and 3 case fans.

thanks

thanks for the suggestions.
That Enhance PSU is nice, but a little to expensive.

The iStar is closer to my budget. I'm fairly PSU ignorant, but on a socket A based system would a dual +12v rail be better than a single?
I thought I read somewhere that on older systems a single 12V rail is better..I could be wrong.

Actually, I would recommend something else if your mobo lacks the P4-12V socket (IOW, if the CPU is powered by +5V rather than +12) - lots of Socket A mobos don't have the 4-pin square socket for CPU power. Single or split rail doesn't really matter unless you really need to get every drop of +12 available from the PSU. If the mobo you're selling is the one in your sig. then it has the P4 socket so the iStar would be fine for it.

I generally don't recommend or clutter my mind with PSUs that lack active PFC and autoranging AC sensing. So I know nothing of the units you mentioned. But almost anything could last a couple years on that system. While those that have the mentioned features will be among the top units in a given mfr's line. iStar has a rep to protect in the server market, so they are unlikely to risk it by selling crap. OTOH, you can get a 460W Seasonic on eBay for under $40. shipped. I haven't been able to get the seller to answer my questions, so I've held off on it.

Yes, the EarthWatts series is made by Seasonic so they should be very good but haven't been in the market long enough to be absolutely sure. And they seem to be above your price threshold, esp. after adding shipping. Frys online had the 500W for $39. AR, but sold out quick. Save $1.32 by going to eWiz via Froogle.

I went with the 450W Sunbeam from newegg for $22.82 shipped. Hopefully it works out.

thanks for all the info and suggestions everyone.

Personally I wouldn`t buy anything Antec even if it was an exact copy of a Seasonic PSU...

FWIW I just replaced my third PSU in three years in my main rig because I continue to buy cheap-a$$ PSUs.

The last one was an Antec TruePower BTW.

:frown:

re. OP: One can lead a horse to water...

Blain,
I also think that you can't do much better than the Enhance ENP-5150GH for the money. Maybe the Antec Earthwatts 500 or a Seasonic when on sale within shooting range of the Enhance's price.

The cheapest one is $67 + shipping.
That's a far cry from an "ultra dirt cheap price".

Specs should be...
1. Super Premium PSU (500W min.).
2. $40 (max), shipped price.
3. Almost forgot... Must be near silent.

So as you can see, I'm wide open to recommendations. 😛

Not possible except perhaps used on eBay or in the FS/T section here or on sale after MIR. By definition a super premium PSU includes active PFC and autoranging AC sensing/compensation and maybe now 80 Plus efficiency certification. Not many meet all that and the Enhance unit mentioned is the lowest priced 500W unit that does (at least that I'm aware of). Now if a solid 350W will do you (which it will for over 95% of users), the iStar TC-350PD1 at Newegg is close to your price range all it lacks is the 80 Plus cert.

Look on eBay, I got a 660w Enermax with quad 12v rails that I nabbed for ~~$60... otherwise youre out of luck, if there was a holy grail of PSU you would already know about it.
