I know, there are lots of these threads, but I've searched and I have some more specific needs.

I currently have a Lexmark X2250. I will never purchase another Lexmark product.

That said, I need a printer that has:

1) Extreme reliability
2) USB support
3) No intrusive software
4) A small footprint
5) The ability to sit up for a month or two without breaking
6) As low of a cost as possible
7) Scanning is a plus, but it must meet the other requirements

I'm very tempted just to get a dot-matrix printer and say to hell with the scanner. Can you recommend some printers that fit these guidelines? Dot matrix recommendations are fine.

I recommend the brother HL-2040 laser BW printer. it has a 1.5x1.5 foot footprint...slightly larger than a "small footprint"... but for only $60 after officemax rebates, you can't beat the price for a lser printer with 22ppm and full paper tray. check it out. been VERY reliable for me

If this isn't the right forum, then the only other would be the "I Wanna" thread in the Hot Deals section - but no one ever looks in there...

No ink jet printer is going to be able to set up a couple months without worrying about clogging. It would be better to loan it to somone to use while you're gone unless you want to go to the trouble of flushing out the print head and resealing the ink tanks for storage - not too hard to do.

I recommend a similar list of pinters as 13Gig above. Many of them are getting very hard to find as they are last year's models. But they will save mucho in operating costs over their replacements. Try eBay.

I have an HP LasetJet 1000. It meets all your requirements but I dont know if you can find it anymore. The newer models (1012 and 1020) will also fit the bill.

I totally agree with what Zepper said. I have a couple of elderly relatives that have (various brands) injets. Every single one of them clogs up and/or the ink dries out. I spend forever cleaning the things or money replacing ink cartridges that have only printed a few pages.

I'd go with some cheapie laser printer (check Hot Deals, they come up all the time) but go for one with either cheap cartridges or one you are willing to throw out when the cartridge runs out.

I have a Canon IP5000 and i love it! Especially the ink cartridges, which are now chipped with the newer Canons... so i've been thinking on buying another just for backup when mine eventually dies.

not hp or lexmark. GO FOR THE CANON! extremely cheap in terms of in cost and printer price. If you want a laser printer go for a Samsung

If you can live with B/w go with a laser.

Otherwise take Zeppers advice and get a Canon-the old models without a chip.

officemax right now as extremely good deals, even better than bestbuy. you can get printers with very flexible connectivities like bluetooth, USB, network jacks, they can run for under 200 bucks

I ended up getting this printer and I really like it. It was $79.99 after MIR at Office Depot. It seems like a good printer. No intrusive software, it's fast, the ink is fairly inexpensive.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
