I have a couple of gigs of photos that I need to share with family members and I was wondering what kind of service you guys use.

I have a couple 7 gigs of photos, but hopefully I will bring it down to a maximum of 4 gigs.

I googled, and found something called Pixagogo. Anybody heard of it? Apparently they have unlimited storage.

buy your own domain and host it off your own PC? or burn them on dvd's and mail em out? your size requirements I think will do you in at most web sites plus it would take forever to upload that kind of data.

Smugmug is great! Unlimited space, 6GB/month bandwidth, lots of other features, but an annual fee around $40? IMO it's very worth it, especially for the features and the speed.

6GB/month bandwidth wouldnt last him very long since his pics are 7gbs one user would kill that quickly

Are they photos from the hubble telescope? 7GB picture is very big.

Just get an external HDD and send it to your family.

i have 4GB worth of pictures... family likes to snap away. heh.

anyway, I vote for flikr too, but it's not really ideal for them to download it.. and the lack of sub-albums make for orgainzation difficult for the traditional user.

picasaweb is good for that, but limited on space.

But yeah, if your family doesn't need to re-print them at all... just resize and dump them into picasaweb or flickr or smugsmug (I'd use this, but I like the way flickr is set up).

Regardless, your upload bandwidth is most likely pitiful unless you have FIOS or can do it from a nice connection at work (assuming it's allowed). Translated, it's going to take a long ass time and that external HD starts to sound a little better :)

I was assuming that those pics are uncompressed ;)

If he absolutely MUST transfer his photos uncompressed, a gallery or picture hosting service is not the most economical way to do it.

You could aways get a cheap domain, and find a cheap host (telnap, made2own, or ask rossman) and host it yourself like I am in the process of doing (www.unheard.org)

Why didn't I think of hosting it?? Duh!

Where can I find a good template for an image gallery, is the main question then.

Flickr sucks, I just signed up and already hit my monthly limit of uploads.

Flickr Pro really is worth it.

Exactly. You get 100x as much bandwidth for uploads with a pro account.

Which is 100x as much as the 20mb you get with a non-pro account.

Good point. LOL.

Anyways, I'm seriously considering putting up a family domain name. I really wanted www.lastname.name but my last name is taken :(

I would still register a domain with NameCheap.com and get some cheap web hosting.

Installing an image gallery is really easy if your web host offers cPanel with Fantastico or DirectAdmin with Installatron. 3 clicks of your mouse and it's installed :)
