I can pickup a Droid1 and not resign my contract and wait Apple out until they release their LTE iPhone (either iPhone 5 or 6). But I need something with internet access without signing a contract for the time being... one thing I would like to have is the ability to hotspot in the meantime..

looking at the Droid1 and DroidX, both available to me pretty cheap, but Droid1 would be fine and is even cheaper to pickup.

Thanks

This should point you in the right direction:

http://www.droidforums.net/forum/ne...e-assistance/103532-droid-a855-tethering.html

I have both phones, currently using the Droid X, and gifted the Droid 1 to my younger brother. While the Droid X is a superior phone in terms of speed and screen size, the Droid 1 is able to run a custom rom while the X is limited at best. My Droid X is rooted and used a different launcher, and I'm happy with it, but I'd like it to have Cyanogen mod but it probably won't happen.

Another positive to the X is great battery life, at least on the stock rom... I installed Liberty 1.5 rom, and the battery life wasn't horrible but it was a decrease. The stock X seems to lead in battery benchmarks compared to its competition such as Incredible/Evo.

With root, you can hotspot the D1. I do it often when on the go so I can connect my iPad to the tubes.

Cool, thanks guys! I bought a Droid1 for $100.. new, never activated or used.

I want to wait and see on the HTC Thunderbolt, and don't really like any phones besides the iPhone.. I just want something to tide me over until Apple finally gets a 4G model out. I need something now though out of necessity not out of being a phone geek, I moved to the inner city of Chicago and no longer have my car. I need something to look up Zipcars and other things when I'm traveling around.

Any suggestions on custom roms that are best for the Droid? This phone has never been updated so I assume I'll have to take it into the store before I even do anything with it.

Check project elite out. I've been using it with a 1.05 Ghz kernel for a while, no deal breakers so far.

Enjoying my "new" D1. I just switched to Pete's 1.05GHz kernel as I've locked up a few times with a low voltage 1.0GHz kernel. Might need something altogether different... but will have to wait and see.

I hope this Droid (I haven't gotten it yet due to logistics issues) has better reception in my high rise building than my current phone. Tho, I'm sure it won't. :(

Anecdotal: my D1 gets better reception than my wife's Palm Pixi. So, maybe. :)

Yep Pete has some good roms, there are quite a few D1 developers still going. ChevyNo1 makes some good stuff, cvpcs moved to the Cyanogenmod project, check out droidforums.net it's a good starting point to find different roms.

Why do you like the iPhone so much better? I think that after you use android for a while, you won't go back. There's so much more that you can customize without rooting the phone. If you wanted, you could make the home screen look and act like an iPhone.

Build quality. For me that's the #2 thing in a phone after service coverage. I want the best built phone with the best basic service / coverage. In my mind that's the iPhone on VZW. Nothing wrong with Droids tho, they are well built as well, I just have more faith in Apple's ability to build high quality products because they always do

I'm sorry, but that's pretty much the worst reason you could have come up with. You trust a company that's been making cell phones for a little over 3 years over companies like HTC (11 years), Samsung (25+ years), and Motorola (27+ years)? Apple doesn't even know how to make an antenna properly. You have a classic case of Apple brainwashing. They do make good products, but they're not better than everyone else. They've had their fair share of failures, just like everyone else.

You realize Apple has been making hardware for just as many years. Moving from a notebook PC or desktop PC to a mobile phone doesn't mean you throw out all of those ideas you had when creating those. They put the care and effort into their iPhone hardware. It's just as good as ANY mobile phone out there save for the antenna because they are still a baby (year wise) when it comes to mobile devices.

Also, don't critique his opinion. In his eyes, he feels the iPhone is the best in class. In my eyes, it's better than everyone else save a few. They've always been wonderful devices, and the build has pretty much been outstanding for the most part with the iPhone 4 being the one that will stand out in most if not all people's minds what with the best antenna design but worst implementation ever.

Honestly, I would suggest you wait for the iPhone 4S or 5 or whatever it will be called. If you do want to get the best hardware/build quality now, go with the Droid X. It's definitely the faster of the two devices with a better screen and the build quality is immaculate compared to the Droid 1.

Thank you for restating my post in different words. I only used the years that each company has been making cell phones. If you want to get into other devices, Samsung and Motorola were around much, much before Apple was even thought of.

Also, don't critique his opinion. In his eyes, he feels the iPhone is the best in class. In my eyes, it's better than everyone else save a few. I can critique his opinion all I want. If he didn't want it critiqued, he shouldn't have posted. That's what you do when you create a thread; open up a forum for other people to discuss their opinions.

I think that if the OP has never really used an Android device, and they get their hands on a solid one such as the DroidX, they would realize that Apple isn't the only company that's capable of making quality devices.

Look at the quote.

It's not a reason I'm "coming up with" to justify anything. I'm using a Droid now, it's a poor man's iPhone... but I'm not fanboy of either. I use what is best.

iPhone build quality > all.

Most people say the apps are the reason. Not I. I buy cell phones based on the network (Verizon) and build quality (Apple, or Motorola #2).

I'm not cooking up reasons for anything. Just being honest from what I've seen. The lack of a 4G iphone is disheartening though, I'm looking really hard at picking up the HTC Thunderbolt or Droid Bionic and reselling this Droid for $120. It works well for now though and I truly NEED this device as opposed to most who have it as a hobby.

I have a Droid 2 on VZW and the thing is like an iron horse, very well made, the phone has never given me a bit of grief and is actually a lot of fun to use. My next phone will most likely be the Droid Bionic, Moto builds great phones IMHO.

They do, but they are behind Apple on build quality. That's all I said. Apple IS #1 on build and I need the best built phone I can get my hands on.

That said, I'm leaning towards the Droid Bionic for my next phone. I want 4G, it's available in this city and I actually NEED a phone like this, and want 4G since it's here.
