I was looking at the Hoover reviews, and there were some really bad ones, so I was wondering if anyone actually has one? I have one thats about 10 years old and still works, so thats why my first instinct was to go for a hoover. The Dyson ones seem pretty pricey, but who knows. Any suggestions?

EDIT: There are some really good reviews for the Eureka 4870DT, anyone know where i can get this in a B&M. Looks like alot of stores dont carry it.

I'm really torn between getting a Dyson or something cheaper. I wish there was a place I could try them out next to each other.

I bought one for $70 at Amazon.com about 4 years ago and it still works great. It's a Hoover Cleanview, IIRC.

The Dyson ads are true - they don't lose suction. They just start out low suction and stay low suction. Tests of the Dyson performance tend to rate them quite low on vacuuming ability. Plus a Dyson is, what, 3-4 times the price?

Our Dyson will suck the chrome off a trailer hitch. :Q I can only say that the one we have is great and with a house full of animals like we have we would certainly know.

Forget the Dyson, Consumer Reports tested it and they said it didn't do any better job than a regular vacuum cleaner.

I bought a Eureka Heavy Duty vacuum a couple months ago. It works great, it's quiet and it has an extra long cord which is nice because you don't have to unplug it when going from room to room (I have a 2,200 sq ft home-most of which is carpeted). The Eureka also has a built in HEPA filter for those with allergy problems. This vacuum cost me $139.

My only complaint is that it doesn't have a handle for doing stairs but we have a handheld Dirt Devil we use for stairs anyway.

Do you still have that issue? I think it is Jan 2005 (and maybe there was an update in another issue with the Dyson problems). I actually am looking for a vacuum myself and I can't seem to find that month's issue. If you have it, what were the top 3-4 models under $200? The $140-$160 Eurekas are everywhere, but I don't know which model number was recommended by Consumer Reports.

I've seen commercials lately for something that specifically says it's More Powerful Than Dyson. Not sure on what tests or anything they use but who knows. Consumer reports always lsits Kenmore Canister vacs from Sears as good ones...

My co-worker bought a dyson and his wife wouldn't shutup about it when talking to my wife. Fast forward about 2 months of nagging later and I bought her the damn thing.

$500 bucks to stop the wife from yapping. Best investment EVER! I could care less if it spits back all the stuff it picks up, and shoots it in my bed. The wife has never been quieter! It seems to work well, and she uses it like it's fun...

Try my ex-girlfriend. She can suck the chrome off a trailer hitch.

Then why is she your EX-firlfriend? No chrome left?

Let's just say that while efficient in hoovering, she left other duties wanting...

But now she was a large working territory from what I hear.
