I need a new TV

Ok, Im moving into a new apartment and where I plan on putting my TV is a very small space. Say about 8 inches. Thus, I am going to buy a flat screen. A couple guys at work are saying to go plasma over LCD. I am thinking something like 36" to around 40". What brands have people been happy with and is plasma better than LCD?

Also which brands should I stay away from? I have heard people lately complaining about Sony's customer service.
