I need a new sound system

I'm looking for a receiver, good quality speakers and a good price(under say... $500?) Also this is Canadian... so no newegg. EDIT: Also this is mainly for gaming, but also for music.

sound for home theater or music or computer? what kind of system? 2.1, 2.0, 5.1, 7.1? for 500 bucks i would say look at the onkyo HTIB systems if you want ht stuff. if you want a good music set up look for a pair of speakers like infinity, polk audio, or other high end stuff on sale. then buy a separate receiver, i have a pair of infinity primus 150's and a Yamaha rx-v640(bought used) and i have about 250 in to the system, no sub yet but planning on getting an infinity ps10 that runs about 200. check out www.audioreview.com

I should clarify in OP... this is for my PC, and I play lots of Half Life 2, Counter Strike and Garry's Mod 10. 🙂

Yeah, you're looking at a HTIB at that price and Onkyo is a pretty good option. I just set up and calibrated HomeBrewerDude's Onkyo 790 set last night and it's pretty decent for a whole set for the money.

If you're looking for higher sound quality than these kind of HTIB sets can offer you, you'd probably want to go with a 2.0 or 2.1 set initially and then if you want surround sound, add to it over time.

Paradigm and Axiom might be a couple other options that you could consider if you started 2.0

oh 😛

So what sounds like a better plan to you... a pretty good multichannel system or a 2.0/2.1 system with better sound quality?

I dont need the surround sound, I was looking at a 2.0 or 2.1 system. 🙂 Plus if I had a surround sound system I'd have no room on my desk! 😀

Do you know how much a receiver would be for you? You can get a basic 5.1 receiver in the states for about $175-$200 but I don't know what you're looking at for pricing over there.

If you can squeeze Axiom M3s into the mix, that would be a strong choice.

SVS also moved into Canada recently opening up the option for a set of SVS-01s

Both these options would benefit from a sub, but should hold their own by themselves.

Paradigm Atoms or Titans would be a more mainstream option that should be somewhat reasonably priced in Canada... somewhere in this general range.

getting a cheap receiver and high end speakers makes no sense also. its like powering a hi end rig with a crappy power supply. if you are looking for hi-fi stuff axiom, svs, paradigm are great, but not worth it to buy unless you have a great processor. spend a little less on speakers and a little more on an amp, and yes, you may as well get a 5.1 or 6.1 amp, they don't seem to be much more expensive compared to their stereo cousins.

But all this stuff is entry level 😕

that stuff is a bit more than entry level. infinity's primus line, or fluance, or pioneer, or polk is entry level. i would at very least call that stuff low end hi-fi. anyway. advice is just to not skimp on the receiver.

Point taken. I would rather have nicer speakers and cheaper receiver than compromising on the speakers to get a more expensive receiver though. I think the quality difference you'd gain from getting more expensive receiver would get you a better final result than spending more on the receiver and compromising the speaker choice.

I don't think something along the lines of Panasonic XR55 (~$175 on sale), Pioneer 516 (~$150), or Onkyo 304 (~$150) would be a bad match with speakers like those.
