I need a new rifle. And as such I need some advice.

Like it says. I need a new rifle. Problem is, I have no idea what I want. I do know I want something for CQB to medium range work, so I dont want anything with a 3x9 scope and long barrel. Just not needed. As of now I want flattop, folding BUIS and most likely an EOThingie with the Aimpoint 3x magnifier flipped to the side

I like the AR platform and I really like the modularity of it. I have 2 AR's now, a plain jane 16" Bushy and a precision lower with a varmint upper. Nice thing about this is I can build an upper for either field work or precision work and have a lower for either. Which means I could build a upper with a nice White Oak 16" barrel, flat top, railed and have the EOthingie and BUIS combo with a lower to stick it on. Downside is, well, its another AR. Something new would be fun.

Next up is the XCR. Gets great reviews. In fact the only bad thing about the XCR seems to be the politics of the guy who makes them. Eh, I dont buy politics. Downside is....Well, it seems a bit pricey for what it is. I could get a gas piston upper quite a bit cheaper for an AR. I can get fore ends of various lengths for the AR. While this sounds like a great gun, it just doesnt bring much to the table besides being a cool, solid gun. Of course theres nothing wrong with that either.....

Then theres a TDP AXR. Bullpup. Whats not to like? The price. 2k is quite a bit more then I want to spend on a rifle. Admittedly this pic almost sells the damn gun itself. Uses AR mags which is nice. Bullpup which means its not as long as an AR. Flattop and still uses optics. Really, the only thing I dont like about it is you HAVE to shoot it right handed. You try for weak side shooting and your going to blow your cheek off. That and the price.

Then theres the Masada by Magpul and the ACR by Bushmaster. Near as any it'll be another variant of the XCR. A modular weapon platform. Which, again near as I can figure, is a damned laughable joke. NOTHING beats the modularity of the AR. But thats neither here nor there.

My original plan was to buy a flattop Bushy and stick an EOThingie on it and be in it for around a grand or so. Then spend a bit extra and grab an Uzi and maybe a Garand or MP5 clone. Flip side is while the AR is IMO a good platform I wouldnt mind having something else. And I've always wanted a bullpup design. I mean hell, who hasnt at one point or another wanted an Aug?

So whats ATOT think? Go for the AR which I can already support or branch off and try something different?

Hmmm, AR10. I could handle that. I think if I wanted to go "big boy" caliber over the 5.56 I would go for a 6.5 Grendel. I get all warm and fuzzy thinking about that. But the AR10's are nice rifles to be sure.

Course, the AR10 also allows me to use the BIG boy shit from Teppo Jutsu. I wanted a .470 Rhino ever since I heard of them, and it takes an AR10 lower. You just cant laugh at 500 grains at 2100 FPS as fast as you can pull the trigger. Its like slingin VW Beetles at things...... :D

I'd help, but my interest in rifles lies squarely in WWII-era military rifles so I'd end up giving you a recommendation of an SMLE or Mosin-Nagant M44 Carbine which is clearly not what you want. :p

(Although I still maintain that the Mosin-Nagant M44 is dead sexy. Plus the bayonet can be helpful in CQB. :p)

Late 08 at best on the MASADA or ACR

If you want something different and don't mind the tax stamp, I'm a big lover of the Krinkov.

7.62x39 variant will be good to 250+ yards no problem, yet small and compact. Or can get the 5.45 which is a hair lighter IIRC.

If you don't mind the weight and can afford to feed it and pay for it, an 18" PARA FAL is just dandy.

I'm kinda burned out on ARs.

I don't know a lot about guns compared to a real gun nut. I just use a sniper kit on a range. I have fired plenty of different firearms from AR-15's, M1918 BAR, to pistols but the sniper kit is all I am interested in. I just got mine preconfigured from GA Precision. Fantastic service! .5 MOA .308 rifle. http://www.gaprecision.net/AR10.html

They are pretty expensive though I am told.

edit: I linked the AR-10 since I thought you may be interested. I don't have that model, I have a modified Rem 700.

Thats easy.

Theres 4 capable shooters in my household and only 3 decent rifles. When the muthafuckin zombies invade I'm down a shooter. Thats just bad juju man. Hence, I need another rifle to round out my squad to repel the zombies when they invade. Or aliens. Not sure which is coming first, but either way I'm gonna be ready.

Mosin? CHeck.
K-31? Check.
Mauser? Check.

Although I might go for a nice Garand.....

FAL's are very nice, I agree. I really wanted a PTR91 except for the whole fluted chamber eating brass. But with FAL's, they remind me of Hondas. Drop dead reliable, run forever, never have a problem......But they just dont do it for me. Great rifles, but to me there just....Blah.

I need some rimz and a NOS sticker on my firearms, so to speak. :D

But I have given some serious thought to a FAL, they are excellent rifles.

FN FS2000 if you want something that shoot 5.56 or .223 and uses AR mags.
FN PS90 if you want a different caliber and 50rnds. :D

Unless you go Krinkov, the only thing I can really think of is another AR :(

16" is the sweet spot and gets you out to 140-150m

Nothing you haven't played with before unfortunately. You could get a mid-length gas system for something a little different.

I dunno much on the AUG clones.

Robinson's changed their stance I think after they figured out Mitt Romney pushed to ban the weapons they make. Not sure though. And I've lots of good about the XCR, no first hand usage though.

Not sure if they are available here, but I do like the looks of the M14-105. Don't know anything about the quality, but it is sexy.

The Ruger 10/22 is also very customizable, this is the stock I am looking at: http://www.mountsplus.com/miva...PROD/24_stocks/MZ-1022
The gun I am most interested in getting right now is the MP5 clone from GSG http://www.gsg-5.de/index.pl?mode=2

Heres my AK: http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/kbradl1/img002.jpg

I've heard those muzzelite bullpup stocks are pretty crappy. might want to check into it more before spending the money.

I think you would be better off having at least two of your shooters use shotguns for close range zombie killing. Get a Benelli, or if you can get one legally, one of these.

Old thread but if anyone is in the same circumstance...

I would stick with .556 to maintain ammo compatibility between weapons. That is almost always a good thing. You can opt for different bullet weights and composition for different purposes I suppose, but 62gr SS109 FMJ is usually the go-to round. Lake City ammo if you can find it. To save a few bucks, Prvi Partizan is less expensive and also of very good quality.

There is a $300 manufacturer's rebate deal coming up for Sig Sauer SIG556 rifles. Check out the various sales sites for the best price. Pretty much the best going deal for a premium rifle with a proven gas piston mechanism at the moment.

Starts Saturday, January 23, 2010, must purchase by March 8, 2010.

The SIG556 can be bought configured pretty much as you like.

http://www.sigsauer.com/Products/ShowCatalogProduct.aspx?categoryid=35

The SIG556 features the same high-performance two position adjustable gas piston operating rod system engineered by SIG’s sister company Swiss Arms and marries it to a trigger housing that not only cuts the rifle’s weight by a pound but is designed to accept standard AR magazines.

I guess thread is still relevant.

OK, for OPs needs I am thinking an M4 (or street legal equivalent). Might also suggest a short M1A but thats maybe too much power and not as wieldly.
