I need a new monitor. What should I buy?

My Mitusubishi monitor, all 20 inches, died a natural death about 7 days ago after 6 years of faithful service. I guess it knew it had been fully depreciated. 😛

Anyway, what should I buy?

I want a 19-22" monitor because I occasionally play chess online and like to be able to see the board clearly. My wife does a lot of photography stuff, so she wants something a lot clearer than the old Mits.

I don't like the fuzziness of the flat panel monitors. They don't look quite ready for prime time. Besides, I've got plenty of room, so I might as well save the bucks and use the real estate.

I like Hitachi and Sony monitors, but haven't seen the Nokias or any other brands (other than the Compaq, Dell, IBM, ViewSonic, etc. at Best Buy and CompUsa). Hitachi has a 21" Superscan with a .22 dot pitch, which is what my daughter has (in a 19&quot😉. Looks really nice.

Also, should I fiddle with buying a used monitor? They look very pricey.

So, if someone has a great monitor they wan't to brag about, l'd like to hear about it.

I like my ViewSonic V75F a lot, don't notice any fuzziness even though it is a flat screen, but that's preferance. ViewSonic is a good brand, but a little overpriced. Still, I feel that you get what you pay for.

there is a resale shop around here called comuter rennisance that sells 17 and 19 inch dell moniters with the sony trinitron tube for about $120.00 - 170.00 US. not bad for a trinitron, i think i might pick one up myself...😉
 


I can't speak enough praise of my iiyama 22&quot; monitor. It kicks butt. They did a review of it here on anandtech, check it out. Right now, you can get them for 850-950.
 
get one of those new super high definition I think it's sony monitor

Yes, I remember seeing that review. I haven't seen one in person, though. I'd probably be happy without seeing it, but I like to see what I'm going to buy. I'll see if I can find one locally. Great suggestion.
 
I have a Iiyama Visionmaster Pro 450, 19&quot; version of DaBoneHead's monitor. It is a Mitsubishi Diamondtron monitor, which is very similar to Sony's Trintron line. I think that the Trinitrons have better color saturation but, the Diamondtron's have sharper text. Both are very good all around monitors and you would be pleased with either.

p.s. The Diamondtron monitors are usually a bit less expensive.

I bought mine on the basis of that rec alone. I had an NEC 19 inch before it, and the difference was amazing. I got mine refurbished for 800$, so I lucked out there a bit.

Good luck finding the one you want. 🙂

That may be it. I'm going to see if I can find one locally to look at. If I like it, I think I'm going to give that one-the 510-the nod. Really cheap by comparison to my Mits. I think I paid $1800 for it back in the dark ages of computing.

personally i had so-so experience with viewsonics, but that doesnt make them any bad... just that i much prefer samsung or kds even if they were priced the same.

I don't know about dealing with refurbs though... If I buy an very important piece of equipment like a monitor, I want it to be very good.

Actually, I've had three different 19&quot; monitors to play with here at home, and by far my favorite has to be the Optiquest V95 (samsung and NEC were the other two). I really like the crisp sharp display on the V95, and I've had it for a while now with no problems at all. I'd highly recommend it, especially considering the excellent price tag on it.
