I need a new game

I don't play games as an everyday thing, but it's really nice to have a game to play on those occasions where you're bored and need something to do. I just played through HL1 and the Opposing Force pack after 6 months of on and off casual playing. It was fun. Can anyone reccomend a good game to play in this fashion? I don't want to play HL2. I actually have it sitting in a box, but I'm not going to play because I know my current machine wouldn't make the most of the game. Addictive = bad. FPS would be good, but I'm not against other genres. Thanks!

PC specs:
2100+ Palomino
Abit NF7-S
512MB DDR2700
5600 Ultra

You could play Painkiller like that. For me it took me about 20 minutes to beat a map, but that was because I wanted to make sure I got everything, there are goals for each map like in older games(i.e. duke nukem, doom). You could spend a long time trying to beat it.

You could also try Command and Conquer: Generals, it's an RTS. It has 3 campaigns and is pretty fun. I suggest the expansion too though, as it adds a ton more to it and has 3 more campaigns. It's one of my favorite RTS games.

For RPG, you could get the Neverwinter Nights Gold Pack, which comes with NWN plus a couple expansions. You could probably play that casually for years.

I always find Diablo 2 and Dungeon Seige easy to get into.
You can play for 5 minutes or 5 hours and its all the same.

Assuming the industry lovers dont flame me:
You could also try getting into emulation. A lot of those old NES,SNES and Genesis games are good for quick playing. Especially when you can save anywhere.

Cool. I played Red Alert 2 for a long time, still do. My friend offered to give me Generals, but I haven't done it yet. How much different from RA2 is the gameplay? Thanks.

Well, personally I didn't much like the units in Red Alert, so I never played RA2. The thing I like about Generals the most is that every single unit is unique. Even the basic units are completely different on each side. Each side has it's own gameplay style, so you gotta find the side you like. I personally like USA for the air force. China is for tanks and GLA is for... well I'm not sure what they are for, but they do neat stuff too. Zero Hour adds a whole lot more. See in Generals, the new thing is general abilities. Once you get enough experience in combat you get to choose a new ability to use. They can range from carpet bombing to instant vehicle repair. In Zero Hour, there are not only more general abilities, but there are also specific generals to choose. Like I can choose the Air Force general and I get special air units, other special abilities, and special buildings. There are also downsides, like maybe tanks cost more, or even no tanks at all for one of the generals. Zero Hour adds so much more gameplay that you'd never go back. I'd suggest beating the Generals campaign first before getting it, because once you get it you never will :p

Mechwarrrior4 Complilation? That's MW4 Vengeance, MW4 Black Knight addon for Vengeance, and MW4 Mercenaries, and I saw it at CompUSA for $19.99 the other day. Your rig will be just right for MW4. Set the difficulty to Elite and I promise there'll be some missions that will keep you busy

In keeping with the HL1 theme, you might give Blue Shift a try. It's the final HL1 expansion pack and let's you play from Barney's (the security guard) point of view.

PK is in the bargain bin - i got it for $20 at Best Buy last week. VERY addicting. Latest gfx but not too demanding on your system . . . . and yes, it is VERY long IF you want to see the "true" ending.

Another game you'll probably like is Star Wars - Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. Very very long and and superb FPS using "force" powers . . . . your rig will like it as it's a Quake III engine. . . .

Also try Deus Ex the original and/or Thief II . . . . will both run superbly on your machine and they are both LONG (involving) and exceptional games.

Finally, Alien vx. Predator II - THREE campaigns to keep you for MONTHS and very good besides.

I ALMOST picked this up tonight. I always liked mech games. Problem is, I lack a joystick, which I must have if I am going to get back into it. So I'm going to look for one on new egg, along with a new keyboard and headset now.

Diablo 2 would play great on that system. I bought a used copy (+ Lord of Destruction Add-on) for $12 in the for sale forum a few months back.
