Hello, my old usb umax astra 2010 scanner died on me today (it wont stop going backwards). I bought a HP scanjet 4600 scanner a little while ago and no matter what I do it won't cooperate with windows or with HP software. I've spent 2 hours trying to make it work and nothing goes, so I've decided 30 bucks down the drain. I now want to buy a new dependable scanner, basically with all the functions my old UMAX had, as in no warm up lamp time and complete support with microsoft document scanning (as in I want to plug it in and just click on the scanner and scan). I do not do much if any photo scanning, basically all document scanning with OCR. There are two other features I may be interested in that my UMAX didn't have, first I would like a slim scanner if possible. Second it would be nice if it didn't require an external power supply. What is the best scanner for me?

Try looking for Canon's. They have slim USB 2.0 and very reliable. No light warm up required too.

Most scanners use the cold-cathode tubes now that do require some warmup. The Canon LiDE series are among the few that don't. Almost all use external PSUs to avoid having to UL (et al.) certify the whole device... Some of the Canon LiDEs are also USB powered - one more of your requirements down...
. I would normally recommend something like the Epson 2480, but the Epsons don't meet either of your requrements...
