sigh... after two years and some months, my trusty yamaha cdr400at is crapping out, and i'm going to bite the bullet and get a new one. what's good in cdrs anymore? i haven't kept up at all since i got this one way back when. i read something about burnproofing - should i bother with that? opinions, brand loyalty appreciated.

Plextor, Yamaha, and Sony seem to be the best brands.
Try to stick with scsi if you have a scsi card and of course get at least a 8x or higher burner. For now, 16x speed seems to be worthless and burn-proof seems to be a good investment if you have the extra money.

I'll let the others take it from here...

Well I bought a Iomega zip 650 and it is as easy to use as falling down the stairs drunk. And it copies what you want it too.

At the office the know it all who claims to have more computer knowledge than myself wouldn't listen.
He bought a Sony and you actually have to pay attention to all kinds of stuff in the manual instead of point and click and the backup software sucks and it won't recognize win backup in win98'.

Then the other know it all (the boss/owner) had me setup a pc with Asus board and K7 ath 750 and all the trimmings and here he tells me that his son says to get a yamahad. Well we are on #2 because the first one went #2 on us and #2 at least makes copies but the software acts up for some reason. And yet all of the other programs on the computer fly like plates during a domestic.

So I guess I would say go with the current Iomega. (Bought one for my very newbie and very uncomputer like mom as well and she jamms with it and is just burning her little heart's desire)

i guess i should qualify my search a little bit... i do have scsi, so i'll be looking for that. i'm gonna steer clear of yamaha after this drive crapped out within three years. seems like from this board and others i've asked that it's narrowed down to sony and plextor... the new plextor got good reviews lately, so i might look into that one. thanks all.
