So, I'm a college kid, going into junior year next semester and I need a new car. I'm driving a Mercury sable '92 right now and Am looking at Hyundai Accent GLS's. Four door, Auto, AC, just basic design, they come out to about 11k. I was looking at Honda Civics but with my loans and the lack of money due to college I think the 14 or 15k pricetag might be a little too high. My Father owns an Accent two door hatchback and loves it. I also Like the 10 Year/100k miles warranty. I'm looking for experiences, reviews, horror stories, etc etc etc. Thanks:D

Edit: I want a new one because I want a warranty. I have enough money right now to afford the Accent, not so much the years insurance for it but i could work it off throughout the summer. If it's used I don't want to have to deal with even more repairs, as i have been doing that for 3 years now with my Sable (2k+ in repairs so far, 600 in the first year alone). I've looked at the Elantras and their nice, about the same as the accents price wise, still better than the Civics.

Why does it have to be brand new? You can get equally nice used cars for $10K or less...

Why not buy something used? You can get a lot more car for your money. It sounds pretty asinine to go brand new if your budget isn't much more than 10k.

you do NOT need a new car. you need a newer used car, if even that. the last thing you need if you have no money is even MORE debt.

Buying a new car seems kind of stupid. If you want a nice car, why not take a look at some used Acuras?

I'd rather buy a used Hyundai Elantra than a new Hyundai Accent.

Since they don't hold their resale value you can get a good deal.

I agree, I love my Elantra (though I did buy it new). Just make sure to get a model with the "sports tuned steering and suspension" (in 05 it was all models except the GLS sedan).

95/96 camry 4 banger FTW. or anything that uses the 2.2L 5sfe motor.. solid mofo. in financial retrospect, i should have found another one after mine was totaled. but the non-logical side of me won that debate out. heh.

Good point. And if the full warranty transfers (which may or may not, better find out first), there's absolutely no reason not to go used.

I'm almost certain the long warranty doesn't transfer. The second owner probably gets a clipped one. I know mitsu's is like that, they're all just market gimmicks. :p

Yeah, they replaced the trans/clutch in my friend's evo right after he bought it used;) I think he got damned lucky.

EDIT: From my quick browsing of Hyundai's website, full warranty transfers EXCEPT the powertrain goes to 5/60k, same as bumper to bumper warranty.

I have heard that the people that buy Hyundai's or Kia's don't maintain them properly. They are inexpensive cars that if maintained properly could last as long as a Honda. The nice thing about buying a new car is that you know it was well (or poorly) maintained. If you buy a used car and it's always in the shop then it ends up costing you more in the long run. A 1 year old Certified used Honda costs almost as much as a brand new Honda. If you get a used Hyundai have it checked out.

Buying a new car even with a warranty doesn't make financial sense. So stop bullsh!tting yourself into thinking you need a new car. In addition, I'd walk (or if I had no legs), crawl to school before I'd drive a POS accent.

Buy a late model used car that is easy (and cheap) to repair and has massive depreciation. (ex. Ford crown victoria, ford taurus, chevy impala.) Even Rossman will agree.

I already have a Mercury Sable aka Ford Taurus. After the problems I've had with this car over the past 4 years, i will NEVER buy a Ford again. As originally stated i put over 2k into this car and it's still hardly runs, has no horn or cigarette lighter and still needs new shocks. Its a 92 for God sake with less than 150k on the odometer. A new car comes with the warranty. Secondly, Accents have a better sde crash test rating than Honda Civics (look it up on Edmunds if you don't believe me), and are rather close in front impact. They are also at least 3k cheaper. They also have the JD Powers and Associates award for overall crash test ratings.

Evidence for opinions Please, not biased opinions.

Get whatever you like and whatever you can afford; Go domestic/like a ford focus is a good car for a good price

It would be very silly to buy a brand new Hyundai. Get a two year old one with low mileage and save a ton of $

What about that laptop?

Nope I haven't forgotten after all these years :)

LOL don't worry I'm back to hating Dell again. I just finished removing the power switch from a new ATX power supply just to get it to fit in a stupid Dell case.

BTW I have an Apple laptop now. It's much better than any of the Dell's (except for having to take out over 50 screws to replace the HD).

Just wait for another Dell laptop hot deal and you might be singing another tune ;)

if u r looking for a cheap reliable car buy a 1999 or newer chevy prism. Built by chevy but has a toyota motor. Gets great gas mileage also. Older prisms also have toyota motors in them and are known to run way past 200k without requiring major repair. YMMV ofcourse depending on how the car was treated by previous owners.
