My trusty Ti-83+ finnaly died (someone threw it across a room :mad😉. I am in the market for a new calculator. I am a Jr. in highschool taking calc and hoping to be able to use the calc for college and stuff. What calc(s) do you guys reccomend?

I've been outta the market too long. I wanna say I had a TI-85 in high school and college. Do they still make those?

I second that. I am an engineering student and it has served me quite well. I think it depends on school as to what they allow for calculators. However, on the F.E exam you cant use any graphing calculators as far as I know.

I am just afraid I won't be able to use an 89. I've heard they are one of the bst, but the 86 is more accepted by professors.

Whatever you do, do NOT get a Ti-89.

Here's my reasoning why:

With calculus, its very important to learn the foundations of it. Integrals, Derivatives, Limits, etc. With a Ti-84, it's much more tedious to get an answer for these types of problems, and thats if the calculator will even do it at all. The Ti-89 allows you to cheat, so you wind up not doing the work at all.

If you must, get a Ti-84 and Ti-89. This way you can use the Ti-84 for actually doing all of your work, and a Ti-89 to check it.

I have been doing the work with a Ti-83 so far. I am just trying to future-proof with my next purchase.
The TI-84 just has a better display and more memory. In terms of functionality it's really not that much different than the TI-83.

I had a TI-92 (got it for $18 on clearance at target, no box/manual) and I couldn't agree with you more.

Every time I had a difficult problem it was.........must.......keep......hands-off TI-92. Plus, even some of the answers it gives you are incorrect due to the way it solves equations.

Some of the new Ti models are out of controls. They might as well be called a gameboy with some of the applications they can run.
