The shelf my keyboard sits on is 20? wide, and the keyboard is 18? wide. I want to be able to have my mouse next to it, so I am looking for a narrower keyboard. Does anyone make one? What about one without the right side number pad? That ought to shave off 4?.

Here's a small keyboard and it still has all of the keys. There are other Zippy's that probably fit too, and with different styling.

The Numeric Keypad should have been dropped from "standard" PC keyboards twenty years ago. The width of an "AT" keyboard often forces the mouse to be placed in very risky (healthwise) locations. A reduced-width keyboard would make easier to safely position a mouse.

I often use mice left-handed to allow the keyboard and mouse to be better-centered on my body, causing less strained body positioning.

One of the best outlets for a wide variety of computer parts, accessories, cables, keyboards, etc., is Cyberguys. Here is a sample of a very compact keyboard that includes a keypad at a friendly price.

Apple sold them separately for years. Then you can put it where it's most convenient. There are twenty of them on Newegg.com, starting at $5.99.

I haven't touched a Numeric Keypad since I quit using the 1987 PIM "Memory Mate", which used the Keypad's "+" and "-" keys to advance one record. But those keys were programmable anyway.

The bulk of users don't touch the Numeric Keypad. It's crazy to include them on nearly every keyboard when few use them and they interfere with the comfortable use of the main keyboard and mouse, which everybody DOES use.

I have the white version of the black one at the Cyberguys link above for sale in my FS/T thread linked below. Another is the excellent Cherry G84-4100 PPAUS - the new models are very expensive and lack the two-tone keytops (search on- Cherry mini keyboard - the cheap ones don't use the model number in the title - use the model number and you'll get the high priced listings). I bought a lightly used one on eBay for a very reasonable price and am using it right now. I like that my trackball is right off the end of the home row. I also like that it approximates the OTK (one true keyboard meaning the original IBM AT keyboard) layout. I also have some USB calc./keypads in my FS/T listing for those times when you need - balancing the checkbook, doing taxes, etc.
. Most of the others listed above seem to be either out of stock or way too expensive or just to long to fit in some mousing room next to it in the space you have.

I dislike keypads, they don't lend themselves to a very ergonomic position. Choices are pretty limited with wireless. :(

Apple's bluetooth keyboard is really small. Dinovo Edge is still pretty wide @16 inches... But the regular Dinovo with the wireless keypad seems to be narrow enough.

Quite a few more choices in wired...but I've heard good things about Cherry's switches.
