I have a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta with the turbo diesel engine (automatic). Lately my car has had trouble accelerating. When I step on the gas, the engine revs out of control and my rps almost red line before it shifts into second gear. The transition from 2nd to 3rd is a bit smoother. It's not running hot and no other warning lights are on. Can anyone make any suggestions before I start shelling out money I don't have.

Sounds like Trans is slipping. Check to make sure fluid level is up to normal. If fluid is old/bad you can change it and install a new trans filter. Also look and see what color it is? Is it a nice clean red, or is it really dark and/or smeels bad?
After that its to the shop, nothing else you can really do. Now it might be a simple computer problem not letting shift right, but wioth it not making much power and the tach moving to the red line fast, to be honest it does not sound like a easy fix.

Definately a transmission problem. The power's being made, but it just isn't making it. Try having the transmission flushed, it costs about $70 at Jiffy Lube type stores using their flush service, the pan service runs about $40 but doesn't pull out as much fluid.

Have you checked the transmission fluid (did you smell it? smell burnt?)? Sounds like the transmission and a flush probably isn't gonna help...
