$900. I picked up the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 and a 1.4x TC for under $750 (Off of Ebay, so it's not the same as buying from B&H obviously).
It's *kind of* two lenses in one with that setup. Something like that would be my suggestion for a bit more flexibility. Combine it with the kit lens and you can cover a decent amount of ranges.
