I need a little SSD advice

T

Tim

Please forgive my ignorance on SSD's ahead of time.

I have a $50 credit on my newegg account just begging to be used. I want to know what the best bang for the buck SSD would be for me. (paired with the PC in my sig) Newegg links are also highly appreciated.

Space requirements are only for a Windows 7 install, and a couple of small programs here and there (no office productivity software), and maybe one game at a time. All other games/pictures/music/videos etc are going to be on a couple of HDD's.

I like my X25-V a lot. And so does Anand if you read...
If you need more space get an X25-M, no brainer...

Your $50 should NOT expire so I'd patiently wait for a sale. Best bang for the buck would be an SSD that you can get for ~$2 a gig. The current crop of SSDs are largly babysit-free.

I recommend Intel, Kingston (both have great warranties) or any TRIM enabled drives. The only ones I'd avoid would be the Patriot PS-something drives. A good listing is here: http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=736.

Zap just posted in the hot deals thread about a Thurday "shell shocker" deal on the Kinston 40GB drive. You should look into that. Look early on Thursday though, since it will sell out quick if the price is good.

The 40GB Intel would be much choice. The 40GB Kingston isn't bad but no trim support. I would actually go with the 30GB Agility over the Kingston.

The newegg shellshocker today was the 40gb intel SSD for 98.

My 50 credit just went byebye, but at least I'm only paying 1.25 per gb!

I'm pretty excited about this, seeing as how I keep reading person after person saying that it's the most performance enhancing upgrade they've done in quite some time.

Looks like you have a pretty beastly machine. You should really be able to appreciate upgrading your biggest choke point.

Thanks, it's a bit dated now, but it still handles pretty much anything I throw at it. I figure I can get another good year plus out of it before I really (want) need to upgrade.
