I need a little advice. Confirm my thoughts.

I moved my entire rig out of one case and into the new case that I have modded especially for it. My mobo, KT7-Raid, has always had a problem keeping its Cmos. I move the case in any fashion beyond sliding it a bit to reach behind it and the Cmos is cleared when I turn it back on. I checked the battery and it sits loose, wobbles by touching it. I think the connection is finally shot, because after I moved the board, it quit working altogether. I hit the power switch and the fans all turn on. The chipset fan goes fine, the fan on the vid card spins, the system will not boot. I kept playing with it for a while and got the monitor to turn on once: "Bios Checksum Error" and that was the only thing it has told me since the migration between cases. I even re-packed the board when it was out of the case in its box to protect it.

I am pretty well conviced that the poor Cmos battery connection is the cause of my problem, maybe even the board is dead totally. I did try to clear the Cmos via jumper and it got me nowhere.

What do you guys think? Dead and need an RMA? Thanks for the help.

Maybe it's shorting out on the case somewhere? Also, I was once able to cure a checksum error by flashing the BIOS with an update. But that battery connector doesn't sound too good either. If you feel OK with doing it, you can try bending the connectors on the holder to provide more stable contact.

You're not using an Enlight 7237 case are you?? The 7237 has one Mobo stand-off that does not match up to a hole on some ATX Boards and can short the board and cause the battery to drain (among other things). It's the one near the 2nd PCI Slot (3rd case slot). Also if you have an errant screw wedged under your Mobo it can do the same thing. I've seen this one on several homebuilt systems that have been brought in for service.

Ironically, I moved the mobo from an Enlight 7237 into an Antec KS282. The same package that Onvia had for like $49.99 shipped. That is when the problems began. I just built two systems using the same case and never had a problem. I agree that the battery doesn't look good. I can't flash the bios, it doesn't boot far enough to do anything. The screen just sits blank. The hard drive spins up and the fans turn on, my cd-rom will open, but the system doesn't like to operate. Not sure what could cause it other than a bad connection with the cmos battery.

I did have one thought earlier. If the die on my Duron was cracked, would the system behave this way? Power up and not actually do anything. If so, I may have to look into checking somehow. I wasn't sure if it could actually come up with the "Bios checksum error" with a cracked die. I hope it isn't, but the processor is a retail. How hard is an RMA to Amd? Almost as hard as one to Abit?

Thanks for the responses guys.

Anyone else have a solution? I emailed Abit (like that will get me anywhere) and am hoping they will shock me with a response. Wish they were like Antec. I email them with a problem and leave my phone number, they call within hours to take care of my problem. RMA for a psu took four days start to finish. I got my new one four days later and they got mine three days after I sent it out (advance RMA). Very pleased with their customer service.

Wishful thinking that Abit will help me out soon.
