I need a Linux modem

Though linux has gotten better about being able to use some winmodems, which the internal one is, it can be problematic. External modems are real hardware modems, which is easier to work with in linux. Besides the external says it will work in linux.

Yeah, I'd stay away from the Internal modem, because it's a Conexant Winmodem. You can tell from the description, because it says that it doesn't work with DOS or Windows 3.1, and that it needs at least a 233Mhz processor. Modems with an onboard controller will work on practically any system, and DOS (and Linux) will recognize it without any problems.

External modems are easier to diagnose. Almost all 56k ext. modems work.

I like US Robotics, you get a lifetime warranty.

Jose

most lucent tech (lt) chipset windmodems are supported and they can be had for cheap, round 10 bucks i guess

So unless someone has another specific suggestion for a good one for cheap $$ I am going to order the external one from Compgeeks this afternoon. Thanks for the repies.
