I need a laptop that would replace my desktop what can you suggest?

I'd get an all-out config with a 14" or 15" screen, an Athlon 4 1.2ghz, 256mb ram, 20gb or more HDD, dvd-cdrw combo drive, and maybe a Mobility Radeon 7500 or Geforce 2 Go if you game a bit.

Just go for minimums of Athlon 4 1.0ghz, 256mb ram, 20gb hdd, combo drive, and big screen 🙂

Dell is the only company that I have found that uses the highest configurations of both the geforce2go and the mobility radeon 7500. They don't have Athlon laptops, in fact I haven't found anyone that has good graphics cards and Athlons. Probably have to wait til the die shrink.

That's probably an advantage to a P3-M based lappy. These chips are quite fast (the ones @ 1.0, 1066, 1133, and 1200), but they're quite expensive, as they're from intel. If you game, make sure there's a R7500 in the lappy, and if you don't game, then video doesn't matter, and you can enjoy a more powerful Athlon 4 chip.

Dell i8100
1.2M GHz
15" UXGA LCD
64MB Radeon mobility
512MB PC133
48GB 5400rpm HDD
DVD
CDRW
etc....

I think the new Toshiba TD2000 configurations are not bad. I have one on order right now.

THey seem to have the specs where it matters, but they are also a lot lighter than the Dell Inspiron 8100 which is a bit of a heavy beast.

Just to let you know, if you'll decide to get an AMD-based laptop, make sure you'll get an extra battery. AMD Mobile CPUs will drain your battery in a matter of minutes, while with Intel-based CPU your laptop can run for at least 3-4 hours. At the same time, the more powerful video cards you'll get, the less battery life you will have as well.

Hows the HD's in lappys these days?
I used to have an IBM thinkpad and it always felt sluggish due to the 4000ish rpm slug of a HD.
I got rid of it in the end as it got on my nerves not being as snappy as my desktop 🙁
If theres a Lappy with HD performance nigh on desktop equivelant i might be in the game for one also 🙂

I have one that can do that. It has a 15.6-in TFT display, Firewire, USB, DVD, LS-120 "A" drive, and a 700 P3 Mobile CPU. I would avoid AMD in laptops . . . they do not yet have a good low power, low heat Athlon. One is coming soon, but it ain't here yet. The enemy of laptops is heat. P3 Mobiles run cooler than AMDs.

For desktop use you will probably want to connect a regular keyboard. Typing on a laptop constantly sucks. The touchpad is a pain in that regard because hand and wrist movements on it give one fits while typing. So, a regular PS/2 or USB mouse (optical) is also in order for desktop use.

I use mine (when home) as a CD/RW burning station with a QueFire! 16X Firewire external burner. It works beautifully with no coasters.

As for brand, Dell is good, H-P is good, IBM is good, and so are Sony and Gateway. Those are the only ones I have experience with, and others are undoubtedly good as well.

Dell and IBM are my favorites because you can disable the touchpad and use the pointing stick if you are mouseless.

absolute rubbish - an athlon 4 at 1.2ghz produces 25w (0.18micron) the 1.2 pIII (.13 micron / 512kb) produces 22watts, also powernow is much more advanced than speedstep

intel specs

amd here

Dell has an Inspiron model that has a 64MB DDR Radeon 7500 chip in it. They only use Intel processors though.
I have a Dell laptop, and I can't complain much about it at all, except that I can't figure out how to overclock it. 😉

Some laptops, like higher end IBM's, have good HDD speeds (5400). Others like the Ispiron 4100 have crappy speed still (4200 rpm I think). Not sure about the Ispiron 8100.
