I need a host

I've been thinking about setting up a website for the past few weeks, and I'm finally ready to go through with it -- I have a domain, and I know what I'm going to do with the site.

anyone have any suggestions for a host? customer service and uptime aren't huge concerns, as I'm just looking for something to cut my teeth on -- I'm trying to re-familiarize myself with web programming and website management.

also, what are the pros and cons of Windows vs *nix hosting?

bumpage.

any comments on the linux vs windows issue? linux hosting seems cheaper, but is there any added functionality with windows hosting (ie: frontpage extensions -- are they worth it?)

Nope, nothing additional. Frontpage extensions are available under linux as well.

good place to start playing around with hosting

you might want to move somewhere else later, but maybe you don't have to. i still have one site hosted at e-rice, didn't bother to move it since it's only $10/yr and it does what i want with that domain. and now on the birthday special they are giving me two extra months for it, so $10 for 14 months. 🙂

i can only think of ASP.
frontpage extension is available under linux, although most host provider are reluctant to turn it on and you need to ask.

Difference between Windows and Linux is what environment you prefer to work in. Although there is ASP support in Linux, it is weak in my opinion. So if you want to code in that, you'd be better off using a Win host. FP Ext. are available in *Nix servers and any host will be able to turn them on if you ask, if it isn't already.

When looking for a host, you're not just looking at space and bandwidth, you are also looking for uptime, support and responsiveness. In your OP, you said uptime and CS is not important, if so, you'll find oodles upon oodles of kiddie run hosts that will offer you a whole server for $1 a month. Uptime and support is something you should definitely consider, even if you're site is not going to be large or active at the moment.

Hit me up on PM if you need some help deciding where to go, i'll try and answer any specific questions if you have any.

Yup, go with linux unless you need ASP or ASP.NET support. Whats your budget and how much space aer you looking for?

a simple search for "web host" yields 100s of results........start there and report back if that is not sufficient.
