I need a good software audio player!

Any advice on a good, free, and stable audio player for Windows XP? Windows Media Player is too big and bloated and TDK Digtal Mix Master doesn't have enough options. Help me out please!

I've tried Winamp 3 and Foobar2000. Winamp 3 outputs to all my skears but I cant find the perfect skin to replace my TDK Mix Master player. Foobar doesn't have any skins. 🙁

Forget about WinAmp 3 and stick to older versions. Perhaps RealOne player? FreePlayer is ok. Than there is nokia player (not bad but I can't remember where I got it from). All of these are free.

OMG NOOOOOOOOO!!!! RealOne player is the bloatiest bloat I ever bloated. Not to mention spammiest.

I will nevar put RealPlayer on my system. I get nightmares from the spyware and bloatware it installs. Foobar2000 is nice, it outputs to all my speakers but I wish it was skinnable. Winamp 3 is okay but I can't find a nice enough skin that can fit in the program bar at the top of the screen. TDK Mix Master could do that, but it wouldn't output to all my speakers.

There're some skins for foobar but there aren't that many. If you're into skins then stick to winamp.

I use foobar and just live with the inherent ugliness (it looks like the Program Manager from Windows 3.1 only not as pretty).

JetAudio was okay. It didn't have an option to make it super small. Foobar2000 seems to be the ONE! So does anybody have the perfect equalizer settings? Any advice on what to set in the options?

no offense but is looks that important? Not saying that graphical features like transparency and unique skins arent cool, but I'll take functionality over looks any day. My Mp3 player could look like a pile of dog poop on my screen but if it's got no bloat, no ads, and has all the features I want and didnt realize I wanted.... then I think it's perfect! ....for me to poop on!

That's something you will have to play with. We don't know what audio card you are using, what speakers you have, the acoustics of your space, what type of music you listen to... etc.

Try the presets on a song that uses alot of range. As in some song from a type of music you commonly listen to with alot of highs and lows and mids, alot going on. Then play with each EQ slider to find the areas you like. You'll find a good balance you like that is custom tailored to you and your environment.

I'm using the on-board sound of my ABIT AT7-MAX 2 mobo. Its equiped with the Realtek ACL650 audio chipset. I hooked up my headphones, the Sony MDR-V300 to the front output, and my Altec Lansing ATP-3's to the rear output.

well again, its really not necessary for us to know this since this is something you should do. There may be some general themes like maybe the MDR-V300's are weak in the bass range so you may want to boost that, but you might not like that... This really is something you need to do on your own. Someone who tells you that there is a "perfect" EQ setting is full of $hit for the reasons I stated in the previous post. Unless for some reason they know exactly what the acoustics of your place sound like, the recordings of the songs you listen to, and like the type of sound you exactly like....

one word of advice, have at least 2 EQ settings, one for the headphones and one for the speakers. Save them as EQ presets and name them accordingly. Also whenever you have one or the other set, set your audio control panel and audio settings in game to headphones or the style of speakers you have (2, 2+1, quad, 5.1, etc). Also do your EQ in the control panel speaker setting mode that it's in. IF you don't think you will be switching the control panel every time you change up, which most people will not want to do, then just tailor your EQ presets.

edit: typo is my middle name

I've been using Sonique for the past 3 years. I absolutely detest WinAmp and RealPlayer. I wouldn't touch either with a 10 foot pole. Sonique is very stable, and has some really cool plug ins for it. My only gripe is that their random play function isn't exactly, well random 😛
