Command & Conquer is the best RTS series of all time...

Start with the original, then move to Red Alert...
Continue with Tiberium Sun/firestorm, and Finally Red Alert 2/Yuri...

For a straight RTS, nothing beats Company of Heroes IMO. The tactics in that game are far and away better than any other.

For something a bit mixed, anything from the Total War series. The battles have a huge amount of strategy I just didn't submit this as a first choice as it is part TBS as well which you didn't ask for.

Definitely agree for Company of Heroes, it seems very balanced. Every unit has a pretty effective counter-unit, and the destructible battlefield is awesome. The single player is suitably difficult (that damn Hill 192 level sucked...)

I like AOE III - it seems a little more historical than RON. RON is a damn fun game though.

I played Red Alert 2/Yuri's Revenge for so long. I was looking at Red Alert 3 but the graphics just look, for lack of a better word, toyish.

I feel the same way about Starcraft 2 as well as Red Alert 3

Yeah, I don't know whats with the idea of making RTS games all goofy looking now. Starcraft 2 and RA3 look like a cartoon show. That's not to say they should look all depressing like Gears of War, but there should be a balance. I think CNC3 did the graphics perfectly, gritty but still colorful.

Company of Heroes looks really good. How is the online gameplay for that? What are the match settings? (1v1, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4?) Can you join a party and play online with each other?

There are up to 4v4 matches. However, the game is most balanced (in terms of the sides) for 1 v 1 matches. Though I think 2 v 2 is still a lot of fun.

I played the game a lot when I was deployed in Iraq. We'd have a few hours between a mission and start up a game sometimes. But I didn't have internet access so I can't tell you how that plays out. However the game is a blast multiplayer and singleplayer campaign is pretty well done.

Company Of Heroes, Dawn Of War Platinum Edition, Rise Of Nations, etc. Pretty much all covered by everyone else. My favorite RTS of all time has to be Starcraft: Broodwars, it's still very addictive and I personally can't wait for Starcraft 2

Infact, you can buy Dawn Of War: Gold Edition right now at Gogamer for $9.90
