I need a good noob guide to manual settings on a dslr

I have an XTI and I toy with the settings but I really don't know what I am doing very much. I would like a guide that would show what the settings affect, what settings would be ideal in certain settings etc

Though I've never taken the time to read the entire book, I've heard some good things about this one, Understanding Exposure by Bryan Petterson.

My suggestion would be to memorize all the different shutter and aperture settings and learn how they relate to each other and how they effect your exposure.

Try reading the manual. It tends to explain how the cam works.

Understanding exposure is a great book, but it's geared more towards film photography (though many of the concepts carry over to digital). His newer book "Understanding Digital Photography" has quite a few mistakes in it, so I wouldn't recommend it.

Read THIS guide if you want a short, concise description of how all the basic settings affect an image.

also spend a while experimenting, go out with your camera use nothing but the manual mode and you'll get used to it

I dont know what Canons come with but my Nikon D40 came with neat Quik-Start guide and an excellent manual.
