I am searching on tiger direct. There are 11 pages worth of these switches and so many dif specs for each. I am not a hardware expert. This is what i am trying to do. I am trying to make my new Dell Inspiron 9300 have dual monitors. The 2 monitors will be the laptop 17inch TRUE LIFE,WUXGA,GWVA and my current 17inch flat screen monitor.

Can someone look through that list and recommend which one i should buy? Or can you jsut recommend a good monitor switch that will work with the setup i want?

Thank in advance,
Alex

You don't need a KVM if you want dual display... all you need is another video card, or a video card that supports two outputs. I'd imagine you should be able to pick up another video card for <$50 at tiger direct.

You'd want a KVM if you wanted the ability to control multiple PCs with a single monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

My laptop has a graphic card which supports dual monitors. I can hook up my 17 inch flat screen into the back of my laptop and it works. I just want an easy way to switch that 17 inch flat screen monitor between the laptop dual mode, and the computer i will still be running. So i want a monitor switch so i dont have to unplug and plug the monitor into dif computers.

But there are sooo many monitors switchers i dont know which one to choose

i know how to do dual monitors. I want to know which monitor switch i should buy which would let me easily switch that 17inch flat screen between my laptop and my desktop.

"You don't need a KVM if you want dual display... all you need is another video card, or a video card that supports two outputs."
- He is asking for a KVM not a dual display. Meaning he wants to switch between monitors, not just use two monitors...

"I'd imagine you should be able to pick up another video card for <$50 at tiger direct. "
- Spend $13 on a switch... or $50 on a video card? I think I would go with a $13 item...

Sorry Alex, hopefully someone will be around to give you some advice on which monitor switch to go with.

Wait... Bobby, i have a brand new geforce graphics card. It can do dual monitors. I just need to know which monitor switch to buy. Some are like $70 and some are $13

Ok, that clears it up, I was a bit confused at first. If you just want to switch just the monitor back and fourth, just get a cheap VGA splitter, like this one.. I use many of these to switch back and forth between LCD projectors, and a LCD screens, and they get the job done. You can use it to go either with one input > two outputs, or from my understanding of what you want, two inputs > one output.

You may need to purchase VGA cables. Some splitters come with them, some don't. If you want to share a single keyboard, mouse, and monitor, then you will need a KVM switch, such as this one, but my understanding is that you just need to share the monitors. I hope that helps you out.

Great thanks guys, yeah i dont need a keyboard and mouse splitter. I just did not want to buy a regular one to find out that it wont work with thse 2 LCD monitors or something. Thanks for your advice again 🙂

You should have no problems with a VGA splitter. It requires no power, and no special software or hotkeys. Just turn the knob to one or the other. It should work just fine for your situation.
