I have a doctor's appointment on Wednesday afternoon, smack in the middle of my work day that's an hour drive away... I need to come up with a good lie to tell my boss to explain why I have to take a half-day. any suggestions?

I can't do the obvious and just tell the truth, because then I'd have to explain why I'm going to a specialist an hour drive away and even though it's really nothing, if I tell my boss, he'll tell his wife (aka: my sister), who will tell my mom, who'd end up freaking out and being worried over nothing. and frankly, I just don't feel like discussing it (but if I said that, my mom would likewise freak out wondering what I'm hiding).

the alternative is to just take a sick day and take the whole day off, but it seems like such a waste for a 2 pm doctor's appointment if I can just come up with an excuse to take a half-day.

Tell your boss the truth. Once he tells his wife and the "shit" hits the fan, file a complaint with HR.

Just tell em its for an ingrown toenail or something, you dont have to give specifics. Hell, dont even tell him what its for unless he asks.

Not a good thing to do if his boss is technically part of the family. It seems his boss is his brother in law

You got some kinda STD? You got AIDS? In any case, your boss has no business telling anybody about your personal information. Hey, maybe you can sue your company for $$$ if your mom finds out.

Well, then the company f'ed up already by allowing him to report to a member of his family.

You really have to give a reason? I'd just tell him you're taking the afternoon off, and if that's not good enough, tell him you have a bunch of errands to run.

If it's nothing, tell your sister now so that she doesn't tell your mother when your boss tells his wife... if that even makes any sense.

I may be mistaken, but I don't think the OP is married to his sister. Then again, he could be from one of them there states.

The OP and his boss have the same wife, who is also the OP's sister?

Tell him you have a doctors appointment, that should be all he needs to know. No details necessary...

Just show up 4 hours late without giving a reason. It might help if you show up with a black eye and blood stains on your shirt. For extra points, "forget" to take your original out of the copy machine when you are printing out the rules to your private after work "club".

Tell him you are going to the dentist to have your teeth clean. He wouldn't give it a second thought. No need to say you are going to a doctor. If you already had your teeth cleaned then say you are going to the dentist for a cavity filling.

Why do you have to explain anything? 'I have a dr's appointment on Wednesday. I'll be leaving (whenever), and will be back when I'm back.'
