Must be stable and hopefully available from Newegg. My mom wants a computer, seeing as how I won a cpu+mobo, so I'm using my old parts, a TBird and some SDRAM. Reason I'm not going the DDR route is because I already have memory, and my mom is just going to be surfing the internet..

The BIOSTAR M7VKS is pretty good. I've built one system with it and it works fine. Has built-in video and sound, and uses the KLE133 chipset (similar to the 133A chipset, with video). Can't beat the price of $53.

www.mwave.com has the BIOSTAR M7VKQ for $57. Its an updated version of the board with on-board LAN. MWave is a good online company (in fact, NewEgg copied their web site, for the most part).

Why not use a modern board, one of those that can run SDRAM or DDR? In your price range, that'll be something like ECS boards K7AMA, K7S5A, K7VTA2 (ALi Magik-1, SiS 735, VIA KT266A chipset respectively). The former two give you onboard LAN as well, they all have onboard sound.

Going the real cheap route with an all-in-one like PC-Chips M810LR (SiS 730S, SDRAM only) or the newer 841LR (SiS 740, DDR or SDRAM) is also worth a thought or two. These add onboard graphics and an included modem card.

regards, Peter

I got the Shuttle. I didn't get a DDR/SDRAM board because my mom would never need DDR. A GeForce2 GTS is going into her system (Still overkill) while I'm upgrading to a GeForce3, so video isn't a problem. She basically wants to use the internet and use Office at her house.

Grab a used Asus A7V133 off EBay. Can be had for around $75. The best KT133A motherboard. I just bought one from there a few weeks ago to replace one that I accidentally damaged.

Strange, I got the Epox 8kta3 but it has some unususal quarks with it. It's now running a axia t-bird 1000 at 1.4 with no problem and has run a duron 1000 (morgan core) well. When I put in a Athlon XP 1600+ in there, It won't boot up! I have the latest bios dated from last Oct and that does not help...

This mb has killed three new floppy drives and when I called Epox tech support, they tell me to reset
the bios. I have resign myself to use a LS-120 and disable the floppy port.

What do you think of Epox's tech support answers?
