I need a good, fast response time digital camera

I've been using my mom's camera, which you must press the button down half way, which takes a second, and then full down, which takes another second, so the item you were taking a pic of is already gone. I just got a bunch of graduation $$$, so recommend me a good digital camera with a really fast response time, max budget of 450-500 U.S. thanks!

The Sony H7/9 have very fast response times. There are some questions about their image quality for larger (above 8x10) prints, though. The Panasonic FZ8 is also a very fast camera. I have the H9 and have printed out a few cropped 12x16 images that turned out pretty good (perfectly fine for wall hanging). It is very fast. 2 fps continuous mode, extremely fast focus and shot to shot times. The FZ8 is much cheaper, though. I chose the H9 over the FZ because of the 3" articulated screen and better zoom. I have not had much problem with bad images so far, but some people have returned their h9s due to poor IQ at 100%. Overall, the FZ8 has better IQ but the H9 has more features. The FZ is a much better buy, though.
