Look for the best Canon or HP that you can get for that price, and don't forget that you will need to buy a cable too.

from canon, i'd say the s520. good text, and you have the option for pretty good photo printing at your disposal.

from hp, see if you can't snag an older hp832 or something that uses the HP45 black cart. it's capacity is double the current stuff at a little bit more... HP is reaping on ink even more these days (lower cart price, but half the ink....).

As for cables, look to buy.com w/ free shipping (on everything now? i dunno) or price club/sams club... either way, even w/ shipping, it'll be cheaper than compusa/best buy.

hi. for $100 i'd recommend the HP 940C. i work at OfficeMax and we just got in a whole new line of HP inkjet machines so what they're going to do is phase out the older inkjet machines which means price drops. the 940 used to be $150 but just went down to $100. it DOES have the cartridge problem that "Inguyen" mentioned because it takes the HP15 black cartridge which is the same price but only holds half as much ink as the HP45 cartridge. can't help you with cables, the only way i know to save on those is to make friends with a BestBuy employee because they get USB cables for $3 w/ employee discount, that's what my roomate gets them for.

I recommend you drop the cash for a laser printer.
I was in your situation when i entered college... I got in on a hot deal for the nec superscript 870 for $135.
I split the cost with my roommate and bought the half off him later that year. since then, its been 2 years and the printer is still on its original toner cartrige.... and it does a lot of printing.
If you cant afford one, you can always use the university's computer labs to print stuff out... you usually dont have to do it that often.
I dont recommend an inkjet because they get you on the ink. replacements can be $50-70 for a set (color+black). It is often times in your best interest to buy the cheap-o printer that is on sale at the time for $20, use it for the ink, then sell it/throw it out. Repeat.

I have a Cancon S600, I'm very happy with it.......... I've had it since November & I've only just changed the black cartridge (I change the colour ones a month earlier) I'd say I print quite a bit (I work from home).......... for a hundred bucks I'd say Canon S200, S300 would be fine.
