I need a good 40mm fan, suggestions?

I was searching Newegg and didn't see anything that looked pleasing, almost their entire selection was 5,000rpm & up. I need this replacement to cool an Epia cpu, so not much cooling power is required, and it does have to be below whisper silent.

What am I looking at in terms of rpm to have a silent 40mm fan? Is there a better site with a larger selection of fans I should check out?

You could put a 3 watt resistor some 46-57ohms in series with the fan. I did that on a few cases to make them silent.

Must be about 3 watts otherwise you stand a chance of frying the resistor and doing other damage. None of that radio shack junk.

Radio Shack does have a 50 ohm 10W power resistor. 😉

I would think that any 40mm fan will tend to spin fast, otherwise it might as well not bother spinning at all - it'd be like having a small bird blowing gently on the CPU.

I have this 40mm Panaflo (the 23dBA model, not the 32dBA one) on a Zalman NB47J northbridge cooler on a NForce4 Ultra chipset. It moves enough air to be useful, and the noise is virtually nonexistent - or at least not noticeable at all over the Zalman CNPS7000 at full speed and four 80mm fans that aren't really loud but aren't Panaflo's or Papst's either.

I'll check that one out - the depth might be a concern, as the screws I've got aren't very deep. I've had a lot more experience using various Socket A HSFs and I know 4,700rpm can be quite loud on them, and I thought the smaller of a fan, the more whiz they produce (or just the smaller "depth", the louder whiz?). But at $20, it's definately worth a try.

The fan doesn't come with screws, so you'll have to visit a hardware store to buy your own. However, I think that unless you want total silence (no noise even with your ear right on top of the fan), you'll probably be happy with the 23dBA-rated 40mm Panaflo - though your wallet might not feel quite so well. 😉

That doesn't actually look too bad. Panaflo must know what they're doing with noise control. Granted, the thing only moves about half the air of the louder (33dB) things that SVC has to offer.

As for the screw depth, yes, either get new screws, or else do what I do - get out the Dremel. I'll carve out the corners of the fan until they will allow the screws to work. Just don't slip if you do that - a cutting wheel can make short work of plastic.
