Sorry, I don't really know where to post this, I thought General would be best choice

Hmm.....so I just purchased some hosting from GoDaddy.

I was under the impression that they will just give me the IP address of the server that I will upload my stuff to through FTP.

But when I go to account management to basically Set Up my hosting stuff, it is asking for a domain name. I don't have one...I don't want a domain. I just want something where I can upload my stuff on the internet.

So I called their "tech support" department, and I was told that I do need a domain name in order to use the hosting. I said, why is it like that? I have done hosting with other places, and none of them require you to have a domain name, they just give you IP adress of the server, and you are all set. Her replied killed me..."Sir, you need a domain name because otherwise the internet would not know where to go"....
And she works in tech support department? "the internet would not know where to go"........

Anyways, guys, do any of you have GoDaddy hosting, and do I really need to pay $9.95 extra for the domain name just in order to host some of my files on the web?

Honestly GoDaddy is the last place I would purchase webhosting from. They are ok for domains but I prefer namecheap greatly over godaddy and so do many others here. Technically you don't need a domain name but it's probably godaddy's policy that you must have one.

So I fooled some more with the account management page and here is what I found:

When it asks for domain name, i just put something on top of my head. I put www.google.com
Then, it did just gave me IP adress of the server, and it let me create main account. I used the account details that I created + IP address of the server and uploaded a test file via FTP..and what to do you know...it worked.
So.. i am curious, can I get in trouble for using www.google.com for domain name?

P.S. is it me, or do their hosting speeds absolutely suck. It took me a good 1-2 minutes to upload 4MB mp3 file.

nah you should be ok with google. I do not know anything about their hosting speeds but I am sure they are the greatest.

They probably just use that to setup the virtual host. Unless someone points google.com's DNS entry at your ip, you shouldn't have much to worry about.

1-2 minutes to upload a 4MB file doesn't sound bad, assuming you're uploading from a cable/dsl connection (making you the bottleneck).
