I have heard great things about stihl weedwhackers (string trimmers), but how are echos? HomeDepot has echos and there are no stihl dealers around me? Are Stihls that much better? Can someone vouch for the gas powered echo string trimmers? thanks

I don't think the brand matters as much as the shaft type. The straight shaft ones are more powerful than the curved shaft ones.

Ditto what Chryso said, get a straight shaft. I've never owned an echo, but the stihl one I have is great.

I still have a 6-7 year-old Homelite straight-shaft that I picked up from Home Depot. Still works as new today. Either of the above should be just fine, although a bit more expensive than mine was it's safe to assume. ;)

Same here.

Mine also has interchangeable lower-shaft. You can put an edger or small tiller on it as well.

I have a curved shaft weekwhacker and it is plenty powerful for edging/trimming. I've had it for a couple years now and use it pretty much every weekend on my front and back lawn. Much better than the crappy electric models I've had prior. I think mine is a Weed Eater brand. It wasn't overly expensive but it starts up everytime and it works fine.
