My old pos decided to lose all of its oil and i think threw a rod in the process, it will run but is essentially undriveable.

Unfortunately i used the money i had saved up for a new car to pay off a credit card and then there was christmas so I have no savings. Dont really want to get another 500 dollar pos, would at least like to step up to something cheap and in this decade.
But my credit is shot, my mom will cosign for me so that will help. Went to look at a 97 sunfire at a dealership today, they were asking 3k on it. Not too sure about the car though, has some physical damage, not bad but it may have been in some accidents. Got the vin going to try and get a carfax on it somehow, but it has 122k miles so i am wary. Big problem is after we go over it all the dealership says that they wont finance it because it is so cheap. So I'm basically screwed have no way to get to work except to bum rides and i can't do that very long.

Anyone have any suggestions? Should I get another 500 dollar pos to last me for a little while, or is there a cheapish car that is reliable that I should be looking for that will last me?

Anything? Anyone? I'm in a bad situation and looking for any help or ideas

The sunfire is a J-Body GM (Same as a Chevy Caviler), I'm sure your 3 grand could be better spent, but I don't have any idea's off the top of my head.

Buy another $500 POS and put your car payment in the bank until you have savings and repair your credit.

There is a lot to be said for a running pos car. Find one that you think you can trust to last 3-4 months, buy it for $500-900, and then start saving some $$$ every month. After 3-4 months, sell the pos for ~60-90% of what you paid, and upgrade to a better pos for $900-1500. Repeat as desired.

As for financing if you go that route - sounds like a credit union or shady small used car dealer may be your only bet...

I never thought I'd say this but... Buy a Honda. Cheap, reliable, great gas mileage, what more can you ask for?

I see a fair amount of older mazda's running around town here(80's).
My friends 626 has 260 kilo's on it and still goes well.
Hunt around and a person could find one cheap.
Just learn what to look for.

I would also find somebody to carpool with for the next few months. My friend works 2 jobs and manages to car pool for both of them. Even worse in NJ, because it's just plane expensive to own a car here.

Yea I would love to carpool until I get something going, but the only person in my office who lives near me is going to be switching to part time as the new semester starts. just came off of a 87 dodge aries k-car, that I managed to keep alive since spring of 2001. I would prefer to get an american car because I know somewhat how to work on them, but wouldnt be opposed to a japanese car. Other options are getting a kia(dont want to )

alternatly i could go deeply in debt, get a 15k loan and buy my friends restored delorean. Then again I dont think my parents would cosign or help at all with that

Do it! Keep making poor financial decisions, you're on the way to financial success!

You can cash advance some money out of your credit card to get extra money. Interest rate is probably no higher than a predatory lender would give somebody with bad credit on a $3k car anyway.

If you're limited on the money, and want to get something reliable, a Honda, Toyota or Nissan would be your best bet. I hope you can get a decent car.

for 3K, you could get a 90-92 honda accord in good condition. and it should last you
