I need an fan/heatsink for an Athlon 4000+. I am gonna buy from Newegg so can anyone reccomend a quiet, adequate fan (or at least a good manufaturer to go with) for this chip from there? I wont be OCin at all.

I am hearing wildly different stories about what to get...some peeps have reccomended gigantic fans that are bound to be a bit of overkill....other are telling me to get ones that have no fan at all, just a heatsink....wont that cause overheatin?!?!?!? Can someone please help me out here???

I'd recommend the ASUS Ice Cooler if you arent happy with a stock HS/F from AMD (or arent buying a boxed CPU). Its pretty big, but even on lowest fan settings (almost silent) it kept my Athlon 64 chip (although not a 4000+) at 41 degrees. I love it (even if it is a little big) and if you arent sure - here is a review link:

The people telling you to get a fanless heatsink were wrong, unless they were talking about liquid cooling, which unless you are going to be overclocking or a serious enthusiast isnt worth the cash and effort in my opinion....of course people will definitely say otherwise! ;)

I'm sure others will have good examples of heatsinks too, but above is the one I like, and its got variable speed too (or automatic) that you can control from the rear or front of the case.

Do you care about loudness at all? If you don't care about noise and you don't plan on overclocking, the stock HSF should be fine.

How loud is the stock fan? The fan on the intel I has is audible but just barely......I thought the AMDs were quieter...am I nuts here?

k if your not ocing at all, stick with the stock HSF. Else get what i suggested earlier. Why would you need anything else?

I found and bought a retail 4000+ but up till someone showed me where ta get a retail one I was stuck with an OEM and would have had to by an aftermarket fan. But all is well now.........now I just need a mobo :)
